Flat(ish) cycling routes
- J (30th Jan 2019 - 13:04:57)
I need to get fit and am really not keen on running so Couch to 5k is out. I'd rather get on my bike (a hybrid) and want to start with some reasonable gentle routes, preferably starting in the village.
Does anyone have any route suggestions to get started that aren't too hilly and aren't going to be too "off-road"? (firm tracks are probably ok, but not thick mud!)

The Longmoor Ranges would be perfect, if you go clockwise you have no hills to cycle up!!

If you cycle down the Longmoor Road past the Old Thorns/Deers Hut turn off, just up from there on the right is a gate, cycle through there straight up the hill( sorry, forgot about this hill), keep following the path which will take you onto a bridge over the A3, then through the woods and you will come to another gate, then you are there!!! Stick to the gravel road!
Hope that is clear, not great with explaining directions!!

J,
How far do you want to cycle? This will affect route suggestions

Sadly not much in the way of 'flat' around here apart from the Ranges. You will have to get those thigh muscles working on some hills to get anything out of this area on a bike.
In fact, not a lot of off roading for hybrids as far as I know, mainly heavy going mountain bike routes, the Portsmouth Road down to Rake is quite good (one of the more cycle friendly roads where generally drivers seem to give you some respect if you ride safely with high viz clothing) and if you can make it to the top of the hill there's a lovely view point on the left with a bench for a well deserved rest, before heading back!
The path from Deers Hut through the golf course past the lovely Foley Estate is worth a trip (I think it's OK to cycle there, you'd have to check)

Thanks folks. Happy to stay on-road too.
I know the route between the Links and the Deers Hut on foot, much of it is designated bridleway I believe and part of the Shipwrights Way so ok to cycle on.
Bike booked in for a service on Monday so will get out soon!

The flattest road route I've been able to find is from the village down the Longmoor Road past Old Thorns, take the cycle path beside the A3 and cut off towards Bordon on the A325. Go all the way through Bordon and turn right onto the Lindford Road at the traffic lights. Follow this through Standford all the way back into the village. Strava has this as 12.12 miles with 304ft of climbing. Pick your time though as the roads can be busyish...
