The Anchor
- anon (17th Mar 2011 - 21:13:27)
Just wandering if anyone knows is The Anchor having a name change as well as the refurb?
Only asking due to something I heard and saw. I maybe completely off the mark.

They are, unfortunately, going to have a prominant 'Hungry Horse' sign outside on a large pole I think - perhaps that's what you heard. I assume they will retain 'The Royal Anchor' name. Let's hope so any way, to remove it would be the final insult. The interior has already been gutted, the building neglected and draped with plastic banners tied up with string. No more indignities for our lovely old listed pub ........please! To date, Greene King should be ashamed of themselves. They now have a chance to rectify the situation, so fingers crossed.

Liz,
Rather than moaning about everything, we should be happy that Greene King are investing £1million in the area.
Liphook is no longer the ye olde village some people on here believe it to be, and the pub is no longer frequented by Royalty.
I'm sure the refurb will be fab, and as Liphook residents we will all benefit from the changes being made in the village. Progress is progess, and the pub was in need of a change.
Good luck to everybody at the Royal Anchor. Only in Liphook would such a large investment be met with such pessimism.

That's strange, I thought I was being hopefully optimistic with my fingers crossed, but people will read what they want to read.
Greene King are investing not out of the kindness of their hearts but because they hope to improve the returns on their investment. Nothing wrong with that but also nothing wrong with local people having their say about what they would like to see. Progress does not mean just putting up with what you are given. Also, the Anchor is in the Conservation Area but perhaps that means nothing to you.
I found your comment about The Royal Anchor not being frequented by royalty any more quite amusing. Seen any green dragons in Liphook lately? - Perhaps I shouldn't ask!

No, it's that you were acting like it's the Ritz!
And then there's your 'final insult' comment. What are the other insults? I certainly haven't seen them.
It may be in a conservation area, but the pub has long been overdue of a facelift, and we shouldn't let it rot. We have to move with the future, and improve the aesthetics of the village. Let's support our local businesses, there have been no 'insults' and this refurbishment will only benefit the local community.
The Royalty comment was said in jest. It's a family pub offering cheap and cheerful food, and that's all the pub will ever be.
I'm not sure what you want them to do?!

I agree with Liz. The last so-called refurb made no difference whatsoever it was just a splash of paint, higher prices, and staff even more miserable than the previous crew.
As they are recruiting lets hope the new lot know how to smile and react pleasantly with customers who are not necessarily the usual youth club members.

What do the staff have to smile about exactly? They're not being paid when the pub is shut!

Why dont you stop Knocking the Anchor untill we see what has been done. We eat there fairly regularly , yes it really does need a makeover, but the food is always good, reasonably priced, the staff are not miserable, (try a smile and a thank you to them as they rush around with your meal) Jez and Petra do a good job running the pub for the village. Without the Anchor in whatever form it takes Liphook would loose its center.

If you had read my post properly you would see:
1) Some of the insults were listed including the gutting of the building, its neglect and the nasty plastic bannners tied onto the front
2) I am not anti business development.
That said Greene King is not a local business it is a countrywide group. (And it seems from another post here that they are not too concerned about the local staff - but the post may be incorrect).
There is nothing at all wrong with family pubs selling cheap and cheerful food. You say that the Anchor was in need of a facelift and that we need to improve the aesthetics. I couldn't agree more and that is largely my point.
The Anchor is an historic building in a very pretty setting. It matters to some that the history is respected and the building cared for. To be a lively, family oriented village pub it doesn't have to follow the Hungry Horse model (although it seems we're stuck with that) and be covered in plastic tat.

I think we should be able to judge the integrity of the refit if they remove the unsightly plastic window insert from the upstairs bow window to the side of the building.

Paul,
I so agree with you!!!
That plastic window, if my memory serves me right, was the subject of one of my very first posts on this site, as I couldn't understand how they ever got permission to put such an atrocity on a Grade 2 listed building...
