St Patrick's Day
- David (15th Mar 2011 - 16:26:26)

Does anyone know of any celebrations, parades etc taking place in the vicinity ?

17th March

It's my birthday that day so I'll be celebrating.

- Rosie Sharratt (7th Mar 2013 - 16:45:16)

I was wondering too, shame none of the local pubs aren't having any celebrations, it's always nice to have the Craic!!

"Craic" - is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland.

I shouldnt imagine a big fuss is made over St Georges day either!

Any ideas , please let me know ,be shame to miss it ! Slainte

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Andy (12th Mar 2013 - 11:30:30)

I have no problem with people celebrating St Paddy's day - but it really should play second fiddle to St George's Day over here. Such a shame it's frowned upon by many, including our own, to be English.

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Rosie (12th Mar 2013 - 12:46:28)

Nobody is frowning upon celebrating St George's day at all ,infact I will be looking to celebrate it too ,being half Irish myself I choose to celebrate my Celtic roots and if asking anyone if there is anything going on in the area for St Patricks day is my choice ,it's not a competition between the two just want to have abit of the Craic on the 17th March and I'm sure I will on St George's day too !

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Andy (12th Mar 2013 - 14:09:00)

Rosie - You may not be aware of anyone frowning upon the celebration of St George's day but it is a sad fact. Have a read of this for starters:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/...

Google is your friend for further information. I'd like to be able to be proud of being English, and I am, but it is, for some, politically incorrect and is why there is (wrongly) not the same fuss made over St George's Day as there is over St Patrick's.

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Rosie (12th Mar 2013 - 14:32:39)

Andy ,I have read the article you posted me and I agree that this country should recognise St George's day more and also agree it should be made a public holiday too but as you must know there is also a lot of people with Irish ,Sottish and Welsh backgrounds living in England and its only fair that we can celebrate these saints days too I think it would be Great if we could ,I'm all for having some unity ,life's too short after all .
Enjoy St George's day and be Proud !

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Andy (12th Mar 2013 - 15:03:19)

Rosie - Please re-read my first post. I have no problem with Irish, Scottish and Welsh celebrating their national days. However, spend a day in London on St Patrick's day and you'll see nearly every pub celebrating. go up for the day on St George's Day and you'll barely know anything is happening. Whatever nationality you are this is England we live in and a national day should be celebrated. It isn't, because it is frowned upon by many - wrongly in my opinion.

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Rosie (12th Mar 2013 - 15:23:32)

Andy - please re read my last post ,never worry , just go and enjoy yourself on St George's Day ! And be Proud ! 12

Andy,
That's because there's no English left in London.

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Simon (12th Mar 2013 - 19:34:04)

I have read this thread with interest. The initial question quite simply asked where this event could be celebrated. Thereafter various people have made helpful comments which could be regarded as helpful and others have taken the opportunity vent their fury at 'non English' celebrations! I am curious about the motivation for such comments? Is this the voice of the Liphook branch of the BNP speaking? I am worried about making a similarly simple enquiry on this site for fear of being castigated for requesting information usefull to my background or interests. If I ask for advice on the best butcher in the area will I get complaints from a strict vegetarian called Andy? If I ask for a recommendation regarding the best garden centre will he comment on my disregard for hay fever sufferers. If I ask where to take my dog for a walk will i receive a retort as he was suffering from agoraphobia, or perhaps if I request some advice on the best roads in the area to experience a Sunday morning drive you will accuse me of being a boy racer! I was under the impression that this was called 'Talkback' not Talks..t. Enough said. Keep it relevant to the question in hand Mr Angry!

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Andy (12th Mar 2013 - 21:18:51)

So the fact that I find it sad and frustrating as an Englishman that we English aren't really able to fully celebrate our nationality in the same way as our Irish (and Welsh and Scottish) cousins makes me a fully paid up member of the BNP and an irate Mr Angry. Wrong on both counts, Simon. I'd simply like my nationality not to be associated with racism and I'd like there to be a sense of national pride outside of major sporting events and the odd Royal occasion. I think the fact that clearly upsets you says more about you than the views I have expressed above do about me.

Truth be told, I envy the Irish for their St Patrick's Day celebrations and I'd love an English equivalent. I certainly don't resent them, though.

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Simon (12th Mar 2013 - 21:39:49)

Clearly hit a raw nerve there Mr A. Truth be told you clearly resent being criticised for forcing your opinion on theirs when they merely ask in a friendly way for advice about local events. As first said the thread was asking for advice about local events regarding St Patricks day, not a loaded patriotic diatribe regarding your oven views. As tongue and cheekmasnmy comment was, I posted it to establish whether or not I was mistaken in the belief that your were slightly odd. I was correct in the assumption that you are. Goodnight.

Re: St Patrick's Day
- P Weyland (13th Mar 2013 - 08:55:05)

St Patricks day is only really celebrated over here due to heavy investment by the breweries quick not to miss a trick. Guiness pump millions into it with the silly hats and plastic shamrocks etc etc.

Non-Irish breweries have seen the business sense in promoting this as another excuse for a drink up; much like when they tend to be alot more patriotic during the World Cup.

Unfortunately St Georges day loses appeal as its alot less marketable.

- liz (13th Mar 2013 - 12:33:06)

St George was a Greek. Retsina festival perhaps?

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Rosie (13th Mar 2013 - 13:37:06)

Liz
Sounds good to me I could celebrate my Greek background and English ,kill two birds with the one stone !

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Eneida (13th Mar 2013 - 14:54:06)

St. George is also the patron saint of Rio de Janeiro, where they celebrate April 23rd with parades through the streets in his honour...so I will pass on the retsina and indulge in a glass or two of caipirinhas....

He actually got around quite a bit. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patronages_of_Saint_George for the full list of his patronages. You don't need to limit your choice of alcoholic beverage much!

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Andy (13th Mar 2013 - 15:56:24)

I'm with Liz, Rosie and Eneida. Let's just celebrate it!

At last peace reigns in the Parish of Liphook. Good will to all men, be them Irish, Greek, English, Potugese or ........

Re: St Patrick's Day
- Eneida (14th Mar 2013 - 09:44:02)

Simon,

If you were referring to me, I would like to point out that I'm not 'Potugese' or even Portuguese and FYI Rio de Janeiro is in Brazil...

However, I'm all for peace reigning on Liphook.co :)
