A scam?

I was approached on the street late last night by a man claiming to be looking for help because he needed to visit his father in hospital. He said that he had already tried his neighbours but they were elderly and couldn't help. He didn't have enough fuel to get there. He told me an address in The Mead at which he claimed to live and invited me back to meet his partner, Lisa, who he said would confirm he was genuine.
I asked which hospital and after a little hesitation he said the burns unit in Salisbury. I explained I didn't carry any cash and was unable to help but wished him well.
If this was genuine I do hope that the gentleman's father is recovering well and he was able to visit him. If it was a scam (and it does seem to be very very similar to others that have been publicised) then everyone needs to be aware.
