TV signal
- Nick Hancock (4th Mar 2011 - 06:43:29)
Has anyone else had difficulties with the TV signal from the Hannington transmitter this week?
We can only really see BBC channels on Freeview at the moment. The analogue signals aren't much better. It's so bad that my children are asking me to subscribe to Sky - perish the thought ...
| | Yes, we had problems on Wednesday night, but all seemed to be OK again last night. Hopefully after the digital switchover the power of the signal from Hannington will be much improved and Liphook will no longer be a black hole between Midhurst and Hannington transmitters. |

Nick,
We have been having similar problems with the Hannington signal for some time now.
We are now going FreeSat and you might consider using it. All the benefits of satellite but no Sky subscription (or their channels).

| | Trouble with any satellite based service is the difficulty in having a multi-room service, with cost and cabling issues. I tried to build a centralised TV server using software called MythTV which could record 16 channels at the same time and feed out to TV's connected to small PC's - but it all broke after a software update and I lost interest. Thanks all, and also to Terry for phoning to suggest a retune. I've tried the retune and the first time round it simply failed to find the stations where reception was poor! Have now recovered Channel 4, 5, BBC4 etc but the signal is not a great deal better ... I can only put it down to high atmospheric pressure, but it doesn't always have this effect.
Yes, the multi room issue is one of my many reasons for not wanting to go the satellite route.

We have Freesat. The reception is excellent and HD is available for the main channels. It's the perfect excuse to go and buy a new telly and if you go to Richer Sounds they will arrange installation of a discrete dish for £99.
No more rotten reception!

Well, the box (Humax HDR) arrived today and, I must say, the reception is marvellous and HD looks fantastic. Great decision so far.
New dish goes in later this week with quad LNB feeding PVRs in two rooms. You can get Octo-LNBs which could feed eight rooms (or four with 2ch PVRs).
If you don't mind the dish and cable runs, FreeSat is the way to go for independance from both SKY and Hannington / Midhurst.

We're in Tunbridge Crescent and have no problem getting Freeview off the Midhurst transmitter. All TV's have a signal strength of 9 or 10.
We have a signal booster/splitter for the whole house which feeds 6 outlets and we personally fitted a new aerial about 4 years ago. Seems it just depends on where you are and your line of sight to the transmitter.
We understand the Midhurst transmitter is on lower power at the moment while it is upgraded for the change over to Digital in around a years time.
Wish the signal for DAB was must better though, ours is rubbish!

I had a problem with my box last week and I did a couple of re-tunes and it is fine now. You can find sites on the web which tell you the maintenance on transmitters. When I found no interuptions to Hannington I did the re-tunes.
