Door knocker Tuesday afternoon
- BT (30th Oct 2018 - 16:51:20)

Did anyone else answer their door to someone purporting to be from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and wanting me to sign up to a Lottery they are running? I don't know whether he was working on their behalf or if it was a scam. I have notified the charity by e mail in case they have not arranged this.

re. Great Ormand Street Hospital, we got a caller too. Checked GOSH website and it seems legit. Door to door is part of their strategy and East Hants is on the schedule at present.

re Hants IoW Air Ambulance, there is a lottery, subscription based.

I work for a charity (not in door-to-door fundraising), but yes, you will experience this more in the run up to Christmas as charities will be wanting to cash-in and hit their end-of-year fundraising targets. However, they should always have some kind of charity ID card on them if asked.

Great Ormond Street Hospital - be warned - if you give to them (and the children). They have still outstanding debts to be collected of £30 million plus from foreigners using our NHS and "free loading the systems". Until they are prepared to collect this outstanding debt they will NOT be receiving monies from us.

You sound lovely Jools. Would you be able to provide a source for those figures?

Please don’t sign up or donate through this system. it’s immoral on many levels. My daughter became involved in this type of company whilst at university to earn some extra money. It all seemed above board until she finally realised how these companies operate. Basically they’re a third party company working for many legitimate charities, sadly only a percentage of the money is passed on to the charities. The “knockers” (usually students or people who are desperate to earn some extra money) are expected to reach unrealistic targets. I’m appaled that these companies can operate and the general public are unaware. The only way to donate to charities is directly through their websites.

Jools

Less than an hour before reading your post I saw the film of a dying Yemeni child on tonight's news.

I am sure that everyone at Great Ormond Street Hospital would do all that they could to save the life of that child irrespective of the country of origin, colour, creed or ability to pay.

All human life is sacred, none more so than the life of a child.

Surely better / safer to call a charity directly if you wish to donate.
Would you really give your bank details to a stranger knocking on your door?

We had Hampshire and IoW round collecting today. They walk off with your bank account details if you let them to set up a direct debit. I am another appalled member of the general public and rung the organisation to tell them so. Who is to know, if we open the door to these people they are for real. Even if they give a number to ring, wear uniforms and have id badges how do we know they are for real. And what about older people who could very easily be duped. Stupid idea in this day and age.
