Carnival
- G renouf (27th Oct 2018 - 22:31:39)

A big thank you to all involved to make another great carnival this year

Well done everyone

I echo the thoughts of the previous writer. I continue to be surprised how many decent, community minded people live in and around Liphook who spend much time and effort for the benefit of the village and those less fortunate. Congratulations to liphook in bloom folk (especially Joan and Roy) whose float won two awards and thanks for making the village an attractive and welcoming place. In a world where we are bombarded with news of cruelty and hate it was warming to walk round the village streets last night and experience the community spirit that it alive and well in our village. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in the carnival and to all who make Liphook the place it is.

Not only thanks for the Carnival but also to the people who I saw clearing in the Avenue before 9am. Ladies with sacks for any litter and men with pick up clearing away the cones. Well done to everyone.

I have been continuously supporting this for nearly 40 years. Full marks to everyone to taking their time to participate in the event and allow it to continue.
However I do hope the organisers will look into shortening the procession route, it's too long for the amount of participants that take part. I suggest when the route returns to the Square they go back to Bohunt School to conclude. I think this would benefit the carnival's future and hopefully draw larger crowds to wait at sparsely supported areas like Portsmouth Road rather than overcrowd The Square.
Also consider reducing the general road closures to 6pm to 8.30pm instead of 6pm to 9pm. I noticed people wanted to go home before 9pm and were turned back. London Road remain the same due to the firework display & crowd safety. That's my thoughts. Be interesting to see who else have suggestions. Hope the committee will take these on board for discussion.

Martin as you have been supporting the carnival for along time you will know the carnival used cross the village from station rd to tylston meadow. i know this is not possible but a route crossing the village needs to be considered rather than going round it in the future to lessen the disruption in the village in the future. ps the carnival was quite good this year.

Great 2018 carnival.

Agree that Headley Road should be off the route, nobody there and a dull end to an otherwise great route. My little ones had really had enough and couldn’t understand why they had to do the long, cold walk down Headley Road rather than going down longmore and back to the school.

On a safety note I noticed several cars being let through road closures and coming towards crowds of unsuspecting people - could be dangerous and exceptions should only be for emergencies vehicles.

Whoever the new committee are you are doing a good job and breathing new life in to the carnival, it has really improved this year, at one point I thought it was going to finish the turnout was so bad.

Lovely atmoshere. Great creativity.

'roo'
Can you be the same 'roo' who said in 2016, "I think its had its time and judging by the amount of floats its time to call it a day and move on to something new." ?

My grandchildren aged between 3 &12 came from West Sussex and Bucks especially for the carnival A very good time was had by all of us. Well done to the organisers - great job.

Excellent carnival this year, much better float turnout, clearly invigorated by the new carnival committee. Only niggle was the running commentary over the PA system that was tedious and annoying, appreciate some commentary needed but this chap clearly loves the sound of his own voice

- Lorraine (31st Oct 2018 - 09:42:04)

Hi
Thankyou all for coming out and making this an amazing carnival.

The reason we go down Headley road and round the avenue is so that the lorries can come back up the longmoor road and disperse safely in the direction they need to go. If we took them straight down longmoor road they would then need to turn round and come back up through the village and because they have decorated the floats and some are wider this would not be safe as 2 lorries would not be able to pass each other. Or another way is if we take them down longmoor road they would still have to go through the avenue and back up headley road to the square

Re: Carnival

agree it was a great carnival. Also agree that Hadley road should be cut out it was a dark cold miserable ending. If those huge double decker buses can all get up and down lLongmoor road to and from Bohunt every day to get school kids to and from school whilst the road is 2 way and full of other cars and pedestrians then the carnival floats can most certainly negotiate the road and use the system in place to point themselves in the right direction from Bohunt.. I was on foot with a large group of younger children and it was simply too far to walk with them without the distraction of crowds and excitement we were soon faced with plenty of moans and groans and they were so cold. Perhaps you could consider at least letting the walkers avoid Headley Road from next year? I’m not sure i’d Volunteer myself to help faced with it again. Just constructive feedback from a new participant with fresh eyes.

Re: Carnival
- Lorraine (31st Oct 2018 - 21:17:22)

Thankyou for your feedback. .we do listen to all comments that are made and these will be discussed at the next carnival committee meeting

Re: Carnival
- PL (1st Nov 2018 - 19:36:28)

I agree when on foot in the carnival procession walking down the Headley Road and back down the avenue to Bohunt is an extremely long way and too far having hung around in the cold in the Longmoor Road from 4:30pm and then walking, dancing, carrying coin buckets and or push/pulling your float round the route !!!

Hence we did pull over on the Headley Road and dismantled as much as we could and then jumped onto the minibus to complete the route !!

Motorised floats could continue with usual route and walkers could turn into Longmoor Road and to Bohunt ????

Fantastic Fun though and I urge everyone to take part next year !!!

Re: Carnival
- gr (2nd Nov 2018 - 10:17:21)

the route is a lot shorter these days

used to go down Malthouse meadows , the London road , the mead , Tunbridge crescent then back down the avenue , Longmoor road last maybe end up at the Deers hut ??? maybe somebody else remembers better than me

but then more people involved ( and yet now more residents = less involved)

Kids used to ride on a flat bed lorry all the way around started at the old OSU station yard

how times have changed in 40+ years
