Just one more power cut....
- Alex Cameron (17th Feb 2005 - 09:19:35)

and i am going to drive up to the head office of the sorry excuse for a company that supply our electricity system in Liphook and wring their collective neck. Just after Freddie tells me who they are of course.

Almost every night we have a pwer cut now. Once or twice is bearable. but having to reset alarm clocks and restart PCs every morning is fast moving past the whole 'light-hearted' stage.

I know the feeling it drives me nuts.

I have a UPS type of power supply for my servers at home BUT when the power goes off it gives me a limited time to down the servers and switch off. Thats all ok but the UPS box makes this horrid loud squeaky noise until you reset it. I've nearly thrown it out of the window at ridiculous time o'clock in the morning.

I have eMule and BitComet running here with 700+ downloads, so when the PC shuts off, as well my Outlook data file geting corrupted, files transferring down stall permanently.

I actually experienced it at about 2am last Friday night - we were watching "The Incredibles" on kVCD and were about 5mins before the end when the power flicked on and off. It was back in the morning though.

It just so happens to be the day that my SMTP server (pipex) and my dedicated web server are also down. Add to that message from others saying they are getting blue screens all morning and we almost have a bloody conspiracy.

Anyone would think we were living in the colonies, not in 2005 Britain....

You've got a long drive, Alex. Scottish and Southern's head office is in .... Perth! Maybe that's why they're so responsive to concerns down here? A year or so ago, they were assuring us they'd got plans to sort out our problems. But nothing much seems to have happened.

Rob - when you say a long distance, are we walking the UK, or Western Australia?

Don't those guys do Broadband Over Power Line (BPL)?

Alex, All -

They are Scottish and Southern Electric. Local Planning Office is in Portsmouth and hq is up in Edinburgh. Reminds me I must chase them and find out WHEN they are going to be able to carry out planned upgrade and put Liphook closer up the power supply chain, with out own single power source, rather than tappign into three remote units, none of which are actually in Liphook.

I am immigrating to the UKfrom South Africa in April and am very concerned about these power cuts. It sounds as if it is almost a daily occurrence or is it being over exaggerated. Would appreciate it if someone could give me more info regarding the amount of cuts. Are there any forseen plans in the future re: upgrading or only empty promises? Thanks Kay

Re: Just one more power cut....
- Alex Cameron (22nd Feb 2005 - 09:18:00)

Ray - i take it you aren't coming over for the weather. Liphook is apparently fed from 2 separate sources, and has had difficulty adapting to the growth in demand.

An upgrade would seem necessary- without wanting to break the habit of a lifetime and sound really stupid, why on earth are we supplied by Scottish Power when we're nowhere near Scotland?

Who's Ray Alex? Have you been hanging round Hadrians wall again with your four pack of tennants super?

I think you mean't Kay, didn't you?

Re: Just one more power cut....
- Barry (22nd Feb 2005 - 13:01:59)

Hi Kay,

I'm also South African, and have been living in Liphook with my wife and daughter for 2 years.
In the last 2 years there haven't been many power cuts at all. In fact i can remember there being only 1 significant power cut in the last 2 years.

This string is becoming riddled with inaccuracies.

Scottish and Southern's registered office is at Inveralmond House, 200 Dunkeld Road, Perth PH1 3AQ. It is notable for the fact that all cars are required to back into their parking spaces in the car park: if you don't, a little man comes out and reminds you about company policy!

And we do still get lots of minor, and some not so minor, power cuts. Nothing enough to put off someone called Kay or Ray immigrating from South Africa, I'm sure. But still something that needs to get sorted. So all the more power to your elbow Freddie - if you contact them at the right address.

Rob.

God i really was tired this morning when i posted some of my replies...;) S - lol :D)

Kay - its not that bad really, just irritating sometimes. It might even just be our wiring.

Where theh hell is Perth?

Re: Just one more power cut....
- Finchie (23rd Feb 2005 - 15:43:50)

And another thing ...

I am a mug when someone phones me up with an offer I can't refuse !

... Scottish Power "we can save you buckets, our rates are xyz% lower, you can save £abc, we will manage the swithover from Southern Electric, you need do nothing now apart from say yes and give us your direct debit details". And if you say yes - we won't try ever try and phone you in the evening or weekend again !

So I did !

They switched over the wrong supply. For 9 months I paid someone else's bill (and it was massive) without realising my wife was still paying Southern Electric. Then when we finally got to the bottom of it (after numerous and endless calls and call waiting), they admitted their mistake. They had switched over the wrong supply - but WOULDN'T GIVE MY MONEY BACK (until they had got payment from the other address). Only legal threats got the money back eventually.

Don't do it !

Our nice little local provider Southern Electric (while probably headquarted in the Hebrides with cheap call centers elsewhere) may be a tad more expensive - but at least they have some customer facing skills.

Cheers, Finchie

Wow - someone potentially worse than SWT? :0)

:-D Not quite !

At least I have a choice with the electricity !
