Parking in Liphook for the station
- Watson (15th Sep 2018 - 09:32:51)

We have noticed that the road leading off Midhurst Road into the Berg Estate is increasingly used as an all day car park for people possibly commuting to London and deciding to park near this junction, thus creating an obstruction to traffic emerging from the Estate or coming into it. There have been occasions when I have had to wait just at the turning point of Midhurst Road, dangerous for approaching cars because someone has parked their car so close to the corner of this turning. If someone is coming out of the Estate, a car coming in has to wait right on the corner. There will soon be a collision one day. We need double yellow lines on this entry road; soon all the roads In Liphook will be car parks I fear, especially when we get more commuters living in the now rapidly expanding Bordon using the train from Liphook. Once more a case of developers building greedily without any consideration for improved infra-structure and provision for car users, "we want your money but don't care about your inconvenience or environment"

Not sure they are all commuters, most are either building contractors building the new house on Midhurst Road or possibly the residents of the houses on Midhurst Road and Triggs Cottages?
I agree that some are very inconsiderately parked but your comments might be best addressed by talking to vehicle owners rather than posting on here, or if that doesn't help then contacting the relevant authorities (HCC or EHDC?).

Watson,

Is parking on the Berg if not a resident illegal ?

If not be quiet, yes am sure its a pain but whinging about people acting legally and pretending its going to cause an accident is pointless, why not just fess up and say you dont want them parking near your house because your selfish, no point pretending its a safety issue and attempting to align it to something we all buy into.

The Berg is near the station, lots of people want to use the station and parking is limited so suck it up or move unless someone has broken the law. The forum is not going to solve your issue, get over it.

"The nearest you can park to a junction is 10 metres (or 32 feet). This is to allow drivers emerging from, or turning into, the junction a clear view of the road they are joining. It also allows them to see hazards such as pedestrians or cyclists at the junction.”

This issue is not just about people on 'The Berg', the point made is valid. Parking there IS dangerous and it's only a matter of time before someone in a rush ploughs into a queue of cars waiting to turn into that estate, possibly with children on their way to school!

The vehicles currently parking there are connected to the building work as well as commuters but BT regularly park there while working in the area. It seems that some drivers are ignoring or are unaware of the regulations and maybe there is a case for a review of 'double yellows ' in areas where parking may be causing a potential hazard.

The real issue here is the same wherever you live, the relevant authorities, for whatever reason, are not doing their jobs properly (police-too busy sitting with a camera on the A3 or visiting Dominoes in Bordon-, local authority planners, councils etc)

We all need a roof over our heads (new house looks great btw), a lot of poor souls need to endure the commute by train every day and we are all just trying our best to go about our daily lives, even the people on 'The Berg'!

I agree that double yellow lines are required in this situation, as it's clear that many drivers no longer comply with the highway code, or are perhaps ignorant of the rules about not parking too close to a junction.

The same problem used to occur at the junction of Tower Road and Headley Road, albeit usually only at the busiest times of day (school drop-off and pick-up times mostly). Thankfully there are now double yellow lines in place there (though I still see cars ocasionally parked on them) although in my opinion they should be extended to beyond the gospel hall, to allow sufficient space for large vehicles to turn into the road safely.

If you think Tower road and Headley road junction is bad, and it is very bad, then you need to see the junction of Headley Road and Tunbridge Crescent.
Cars parked outside a house on the corner of Tunbridge Crescent and Headley Road right up to the junction. Drivers trying to exit onto Headley road have to drive on the wrong side of the road to pass the parked vehicles and vehicles turning into Tunbridge Crescent from Headley road are confronted head on with oncoming vehicles on the wrong side of the road.

It does not seem to matter what time of the day it is, this junction always has cars parked right up to intersection.

Inconsiderate and dangerous parking seems to be a way of life.

For the sake of accuracy it does not appear to be illegal to park within 10 metres of a junction during the daytime. Highway Code Rule 250 applies to night time parking only and I can't find anything similar referring to daytime in the Highway Code (advisory) or various Road Traffic Acts (law). Having said that, any vehicle parked dangerously or causing an obstruction might be considered unlawfully parked and parking along the entrance to a 2 way road so that people can't enter and exit at the same time is one of my pet hates! Although the onus is on drivers to enter or exit slowly enough for it not to be dangerous, nonetheless it is annoying. Double yellows around the junction would seem to be the obvious answer.

Highway Code Rule 243

Do not park or stop opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space.

Parking next to road junction is a big bug bear of mine. As someone has pointed out it is illegal to park within 10 meters of a road junction rule 243 of the highway code. Some people need to have a read of the highway code to refresh their memory. As for the builders just thinking about the money. It's the council that give the consent for the planning. If you don't want the houses that's needed for the growing population then stop having children it's that simple.

Oh dear, John, I take it you've never whinged about anything then? The lady in question is not objecting to parking in the Berg, just parking just inside the junction.

There is plenty of road space further in, and no one would object to that I'm sure. As there are numerous instances of the same practice, ie, parking just into a junction in other places in Liphook and creating hazards for other drivers, maybe we all need to be more aware of our driving habits, or maybe use our legs rather more.

I do not think it is as bad there as the parking along the Portsmouth rd. The visibility for drivers on the houses side becomes non existent.

The Berg has to take its' share like other areas in Liphook or petition EHDC councilors for the double yellow
lines.

Thanks Jaybee, can't believe I missed it, I must be getting old! It's a do not (advisory) rather than must not, so if I have understood it correctly, (and I begin to doubt myself now, which is a little annoying as I was possibly the last person to retain blind faith in myself!) it means you can't be ticketed or prosecuted for it (although other offences may still be committed), so yellow lines would still be necessary to stop the inconsiderate parking.
