Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- J (28th Aug 2018 - 18:05:46)

I was looking for a planning application in the lists and found this...

PROPOSAL: Construction of a new frontage building, two new town houses and a 60 seat auditorium, conversion of existing garage showroom into foyer of new cinema following demolition of the existing rear buildings and single storey frontage building.
REFERENCE NO: 22101/007
LOCATION: Liphook Garage, The Square, Liphook, GU30 7AH

Seems like a bold plan!
(Annoyingly the planning portal part of the East Hants website is down at the moment)

i hope they have included a lot of soundproofing and parking in the application, just imagine if it is surround sound!

Sounds like a good idea to me, but Helen think about it, it's one screen 60 seats hardly a multiplex so probably won't need a lot of soundproofing and as for parking you have Midhurst road car park close by and most of the customers will be people in Liphook who will be able to walk there, if you need to drive a reasonable distance you will go to one of the multiplex cinemas.

Looks like a great idea if they can get a 60 seat cinema to work - if not no doubt it will be converted to flats if it doesn't. Love the design of the cinema but the restaurant building is naff as you like. There is 1960's building in Guildford very similar - now out of use!

First stage of planning/development strategy to get current commercial use restrictions eased. Eventually there will be a minimal commercial/business proposition (estate agent or restaurant most likely) with the vast majority of this very large site being allocated for residential development. Cinema will never happen

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Dawn Hoskins (29th Aug 2018 - 15:30:38)

There is already a regular cinema/film screening and they never get that many people.
Makes me wonder if they'll get any more in a location a few hundred yards down the road?

However, it could be that people just don't like the format of the Liphook Millenium Centre Cinema? Who knows?

Anything is better than looking at the empty unit tbh
Lets hope it works out - it will be a string to Liphook's bow.

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Jane (29th Aug 2018 - 16:25:04)

How exciting! The current format at Millenium Centre doesn't work for most as they show films that are already available online/dvd etc and cheaper therefore to watch at home so just not cutting edge with release dates, frequency, sound or comfort

Would be great for families/teenagers to have something local that hopefully will show the latest films? as well as offering other viewings during the course of the week eg School viewings of NT performances to aid studies etc Fingers crossed

Hi,
Hope it happens, does not look good as a ghost town retail premises for a long time Who ever the landlords are it must be worthwhile as a going concern than empty. I know about council business rates, heating, lighting, and staffing costs. It has a large area behind the frontage, so maybe split-up to local enterprise?

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- J (29th Aug 2018 - 18:58:37)

You can see the plans now on the planning portal: 🎂planningpublicaccess.easthants.gov.uk/online-applications - search for 22101/007

If you click the Documents tab then you can find the plans (look for "Proposed Ground Floor Plan" etc. At the top of the documents list is an interesting brochure on "The Living Room Cinema" concept.

Basically the existing car showroom becomes the foyer and bar for the cinema with 2 flats above. The small cinema is behind. To the right of this will be driveway access (where the current roller door is to the workshop) to two 3-bed houses at the rear of the plot. To the right of this will be a restaurant building with flat above.

The concept looks pretty good, whether it's actually financially viable to be pulled off remains to be seen.

- helen (29th Aug 2018 - 21:55:52)

I presume if it does not get enough customers as cinema it could become a retail unit again, I agree anything is better than being empty.
It will mean employment for people.

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Tom (30th Aug 2018 - 08:33:23)

I agree with Rachael, it’s probably just a developer planning trick to sneak something through, no doubt they will run out of money for the cinema and make it 100% flats/takeaway/estate agent etc.

Also we already have a similar size cinema over at the community centre, is that packed every time they screen something?

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Liphook Millennium Centre (30th Aug 2018 - 10:00:21)

Just wanted to say that though our films at the Liphook Millennium centre are currently, already out on dvd, it is a community cinema, providing a service for the community.

Many would like to watch a film with friends, on a large screen, but either can't or don't wish to go to a multi complex.

We are continually improving our service, but rely on volunteers. The Millennium centre has tiered seating, a large screen, & a reasonably priced bar. We are currently looking at the costs of showing films not yet out on Dvd.

If you would like to volunteer, we are looking for volunteers to serve drinks, sell tickets, & generally assist us on our evenings. Attendance at the films vary, though generally numbers are on the increase.

SPITFIRE is on Friday 7th Sept, its a PG, so bring the family. See Bramshottandliphook council website, our facebook page or the events section on talk back for more details, Gill

I had a quick sleuth at the people involved (easy enough via Companies House) and they do seem to be involved in the Cinema and Film industry and live in Bramshott. Let's not write it off just yet?

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Katie (30th Aug 2018 - 12:12:24)

My first thought was developer fun & games but It seems legit after looking into the backgrounds of people involved.

They are aiming for a different market to the community cinema, so hopefully can co-exist.

I personally would love it to go ahead & be a success.

Are those names available on the planning website? I only found the name of the achitects on that please let us know J? I do not think 60 seats are going to make enough profit to show hollywood films, more
Arthouse style, but they do not attract huge audiences locally. There are
also plans for a cinema in Farnham.

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- J (30th Aug 2018 - 15:05:28)

Take a look for "The Living Room Cinema Ltd" and the concept brochure that is on the planning site. It's pretty open about the people involved.

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Katie (30th Aug 2018 - 15:45:36)

I looked at one of the planning pages near the top which gave the name of the founder, [removed], who is apparently a local & worked for Odeon & Curzon in the past.

The company is called The Living Room Cinema. It’s registered at Company House and has a website & Facebook page.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to get through a planning application, but I could be wrong?!

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Marian (30th Aug 2018 - 16:40:00)

I think this could be a fabulous idea. Look how well the Haslemere Cinema does. Usually full - and often a lot of people from Liphook in the audience. There are some real miseries who post on this site and won't even give a new idea a chance.

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Nicole L (30th Aug 2018 - 20:19:20)

I know the individual involved with this.
It's not a developer, she's local, has always worked in film/cinema and this is a great passion of hers.
I hope it gets the support it deserves

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal

Marian

A bit harsh. Most people seem interested and in favour - just with a healthy dose of scepticism, probably from past experiences!

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Di (31st Aug 2018 - 22:32:37)

This sounds great!! I hope it's licensed.

Used to go to the Picturehouse cinema in Clapham and such a lovely cosy feel to it.

And a new restaurant.

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Jay (2nd Sep 2018 - 12:53:56)

Is the Haslemere road car park still a public one as that would be nearer to the cinema ?

Re: Anchor Garage conversion to Cinema proposal
- Henry (4th Sep 2018 - 16:44:23)

I live next door to the garage and have mixed feelings about the development. Whilst we bought our house 2 years ago with the hope that the garage would be redeveloped, we weren't prepared for the scale of what is proposed.
I don't mind the idea of a small art house cinema and that part of the plan looks ok to me. (my wife's not so keen)
The restaurant and flats will be right on our common boundary with outside seating almost under our bedroom window. They've also kindly decided that the best place for the kitchen extractor should be as close as they can get it to my daughters bedroom window.
The size of it will block out the sun from the back of our house and the houses at the back will look straight into our bathroom window.
If you have any misgivings about this development I'm really appreciate you making a comment on the EHDC planning website.
Here's a link planningpublicaccess.easthants.gov.uk/...

Sorry for the long post.

Unless I've got it wrong the Haslemere Rd carpark will be reduced in size if the proposed 10 house application for the land at the end of the access road gets the go ahead. Awful exit sight line at the best of times

Any news on this?

Also, remember the cinema at the Millenium Hall this Friday is Mama Mia.
