Train Strike
- Adrian (26th Jul 2018 - 10:13:12)

If you're travelling by train in the next couple of weeks please make checks, as the RMT are carrying out some more pointless strikes (well it is nice weather for striking).

However as per usual South Western Railways are their usual shambolic selves. I phoned them to ask about train services on Saturday only 3 days away and they didn't know.

There have been a number of strikes since they took over the franchise so they should be used to dealing with this and have a timetable ready to go.

And just for information when there are no strikes they are up to their usual poor quality of service, 2 delays and a free taxi from Woking last week.

I find it amazing that all these years on the train companies are still not prepared to agree to have a guard on the train.

I know the strikes and delays are a pain in the bum, but I work with vulnerable people who frequently need help from the guard - and cannot agree with train companies that just want to save money and only have a driver.

Considering it is the UK government that award the franchises - they should be putting their foot down. For the welfare of all passengers, not just vulnerable ones - there needs to be a guard. Particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings when all the inebriated people embark and cause mayhem (not every time I grant you - but frequently).

I've been onboard a number of times when the guard has called the BTP to remove people who are either displaying anti-social behavior - or ticket-dodgers.

Dawn

I'm no fan of SWR but the fact is the company have said ALL existing trains will have a guard at all times, the only sticking point is new trains due in two years time will be able to run without a guard if no guard is available, but will normally have a guard.

The fact is no guard will lose his job, pay, benefits or anything else. The only change is on some trains they may not have to open the doors.

If you're an old fart like me i remember when passengers opened the doors.

In my view a pointless strike.

Adrian,

totally agree, and years back passengers also closed the doors, before automation too.........!!

also all planned strike days are on the web.

Dawn,

how often do you buy tickets at the ticket office ?

if you do you will find they[ one staff member in particular] regularly use trickery to sell the most expensive rail tickets to vulnerable adults, or anybody else for that matter who hasn't checked the pricing options before they travel!!
I witnessed this again very recently......just appalling practice.

To avoid this, either buy online, or from the machine.
If & when there is a guard he usually sells tickets too!!!.........

It is some time since I used a train up to town, are the windows still closed by pulling a large strap in the door,

And do tell me. If a lady, on her way back from the Boots Library to Milford, gets a piece of grit in the corner of her eye, is there an earnest young doctor in a gabardine mac there to fish it out with the corner of his handkerchief.

And is there honey still for tea?
