- Dawn Hoskins (16th Feb 2011 - 14:16:33)
Garden looks grey and miserable.
What flowers are flowering at his time of year?
Any advice?

Snowdrops, primroses, crocus, viburnam, winter sweet, winter jasmine and forsythia out in my (small) garden. Also a fantastic dispay of snowdrops and cyclamen by the big layby just down from Lloyds Bank. Are Liphook in Bloom responsible for that?

Great,
what colours are they?
and do all garden centres sell them
and
do they come up every year or do you have to plant them every year when they die.
(Sadly a lot of my plants die)

Hi
Yes Liphook in Bloom did plant the snowdrop and cyclamen bed by Lloyds and doesnt it look gorgeous. I can't remember how many bulbs/corms they planted but I think it was in the 1000's!!!
Dawn, Snowdrops (white) crocus (purple, white, yellow and multi striped),daffodils (yellow, white, multi-headed, scented) are bulbs and will come up every year without much trouble. cyclamen are white and pink and can flower this time of year and autumn depending on the variety, by a mix and get two seasons display. These are treated as woodland plants so grow them under trees if you like and compost well with leaf mould/mulch each year for a good display. You can also grow them in pots to have near your door/ windows.
Viburnum (pinky white), sweet box ( white strongly scented), winter jasmine (yellow and scented) are all shrubs so should also be long lasting. You can of course look out for catkins for extra interest. Daphnes (shrubs also come into flower now with a lovely scent). A favourite of mine are hellebores which can flower from december onwards. I also like minature iris with a lovely dark blue and purple colour.
You should be able to get all these at the garden centre but if you can bear to wait until the autumn bulbs will be much cheaper and probably provide better results. Treat your self to some snowdrops though as they are recommended to be planted in the green (with leaves on). Happy Gardening!
Katy
