Deleting your Emails - Really Deleting them
- Jay W (11th Jul 2018 - 17:00:30)
So, I'm sure you've realised that if you delete an email it goes into your "Deleted Items" box and sits there until you delete it again (unless you've ticked the box to automatically delete Deleted Items when logging out of email). OK fair enough, that can easily be sorted.
However, did you realise that with Outlook/Hotmail there is also the option to "Recover Deleted Items" cos of course, Microsoft have to cater for the numpties who double delete items that they don't mean to delete, rather than those of us who DO mean to delete when we tell it twice over.
Oh yes, this means that your double deleted emails are sitting there, waiting to be recovered for ...... goodness knows how long! How you actually remove them depends on the type of Outlook you are using (beta or the older one) but basically you need to go into your deleted items folder and at the top there should be the option to "Recover Deleted Items". You need to click on that and I don't think there is an option to "select all" so you need to individually select the emails and then either "Delete" or "Purge" depending on your version. I suggest a cup of tea/glass of wine cos if, like me, you get loads of junk emails, it's gonna take you a while.
Once you've done that, it will be something else to remember to do if you want to permanently delete your emails. Yep like the kids, you have to tell it three times before it does it. I think in advanced settings in the older version of Outlook there may be a check box so you can tell it not to recover deleted items but I don't think it's in the Beta unpaid versions.
You will probably find clearer instructions on the web or someone on here can explain it better than I can. I'm still annoyed Microsoft can decide to keep emails which we asked it to delete - must be clogging up something, somewhere with all that junk/spam that you don't want associated with your account. Suggest you go and check now .......
