Tree-felling Along Portsmouth Road
- antoinette (15th Feb 2011 - 14:10:07)

Does anyone know why the trees along Portsmouth Road, coming from the southern entrance into the village, were felled last Friday? I was under the impression the final plans for the roundabout at Station Road had not yet been agreed upon; but could it have anything to do with that?

I understand that Councillor Rob Evans became aware of this and reported tree felling and hedgerow grubbing to the Parish Office and EHDC. He was concerned that certain trees were protected by preservation orders. His action was too late to stop the work which may prove to be without the required authority.

We await feedback by the relevant authority. I suggest you also enquire into the matter with the Parish Office or EHDC Planning, and if proved to be without authority voice your disapproval.

Planning permission was given for the felling of mature oak trees near Bohunt Manor entrance, despite tree preservation orders. Is this what has taken place? It was obviously deemed favourable to cut down these beautiful trees rather than moving the proposed medical centre car park by a few metres.

Mr. Jordan, I spoke on the telephone Friday with both Martin Small of the Southdowns Park Authority and Steven D'Este-Hoare at EHDC—neither of which thought any protection orders were in-place on Portsmouth Road. If anyone hears differently, please let us know so we can express disapproval over what has been done. Over and above the placement of protection orders, rampant destruction of nature and its displacement of fauna which depend upon it should not be encouraged unless there is a real need to do so.

Liz (with a small "l"), your point about the, indeed, very mature trees along the Bohunt Manor drive and in the area allotted to the new medical centre is tantamount to a crime—which we watched from our first-floor windows with great dismay.

Yes, there was a preservation order from 2010 on the groups of trees along the Portsmouth Road going down towards the Links Pub. However, EHDC forgot to renew it.

Apparently, there are 12 other possible preservation orders that MAY of been breached.

Of course they can only have been contravened if there in force at the time. If they have been left to lapse then there won't have been an offence.

For anyone who is interested in the latest news about the Portsmouth Road periphery of the Bohunt Estate, the tree stumps from the previous felling and all other vines and growth are now being torn out. This leaves the bank totally bare. Does anyone know if there is a plan to assure this area will not collapse into the road with the next rainfall, now that all of the plant life which was holding it together no longer exists?
