Water shortage - A (7th Jul 2018 - 20:07:18) Impending hosepipe bans, reservoirs running dry & what do people do? Fill up their enormous swimming pools and when the kids have finished splashing it about everywhere, fill it up overnight even more . 2 families in the close . Dread to think how much water has been wasted. People like you are void of any brain cells .

Re: Water shortage - Iwik61 (8th Jul 2018 - 12:48:52) Sorry don't agree.We were told that with water meters being installed that will save us money and the water companies would be able to invest in leakage loss .I don't waste water I use it I pay for what I use.Like all utility companies they like to keep the shareholders which most of us have a interest in with our pensions.If the dividends are less one year because of the reinvestment so be it. If I decide to run a car 24/7 that is my decision .....I pay for it.

I am sure that if you are wanting to use water to keep the plants in your garden alive in this very dry weather, then you are doing so... or if you want your car washed, you are doing so. Does that make you devoid of brain cells, or are you just at a different life stage and making your own (different) choices, as we are all free to do?? Until there is a water ban on using wayer to fill swimming pools or plant pots or to wash their cars etc. then people will do so.. and as the previous poster has said, those people will pay for the water that they use. Live and let live and stop being so quick to judge others, thank you very much x

As you probably won’t my pool was filled up 2 years ago when it was installed and rarely needs topping up. I am however somewhat concerned that you have been peeping into ours and our neighbors gardens.

Re: Water shortage - Lizzy Codd (8th Jul 2018 - 21:17:29) We have no water at all in Haslemere Road (opp Colliers Crescent). It's been reported to South East Water and they are "dealing with it". Looks like a pretty huge area affected (inc Farnham & Aldershot)

Re: Water shortage - Mark (8th Jul 2018 - 21:26:11) Haslemere Road has a dribble of water and according to the South East Water website, it is everywhere in Liphook except the Berg and Stonehouse Road. We know people in both of those estates and they do not have water pressure, so even their website is inaccurate. But hold on, it does say that they are taking water leaks seriously, so we can all be assured. Hopeless Utility firms. Its either to hot for them to supply, too cold, wrong type of leaves... Worthless.

Re: Water shortage - Debbie (8th Jul 2018 - 21:34:44) **Update** Have finally got through to South East Water, there is an issue with the booster, they are working on it now and we should have water back on at pressure in the next hour or so. I did question what happens for those who don't have water, they said by the time they get bottled water out to us the water would be back on! Fingers crossed!

Re: Water shortage - L (8th Jul 2018 - 22:28:54) So, Helen & AR, the water pressure issue was NOT as you so readily suggested, ANYTHING to do with consumers, and instead had everything to do with the suppliers of our water. I am sure that I am not the only one who is intrigued as to what you (along with the original poster) are doing to ensure that there are no water shortages, seeing as how you seem to think that everyone else is being so frivolous with such a precious resource. (And just for the record, no I don't have a swimming pool and my now brown lawn is crunchy underfoot as we don't even own a sprinkler and have no intention of doing so, yet don't have any issue with those who choose to have such things). I repeat; unless and until there is a water ban, we can all make our own choices.

Re: Water shortage - helen (8th Jul 2018 - 22:46:52) I am not watering pot plants outside I am taking showers instead of baths, not using water to boil vegetables not watering plants or lawn, not cleaning windows or car, not bathing the dog, not running the washing machine as often as normal, not drinking squash not mopping the floor so often, there are other things as well I probably have not thought of yet.

Re: Water shortage - liz (9th Jul 2018 - 08:59:04) According to the water companies there is no water shortage as reservoirs and water table levels are still high and should be able to cope with higher demand providing levels are replenished with average rainfall in the autumn. Higher demand however is causing some systems problems which appears to be what we have seen in some areas of Liphook or Haslemere. So no need to panic and not wash the dog etc.! I am watering annuals, pots, new plants and vegetables in my garden plus any others that appear in distress. Not watering the lawn as it doesn't need it and will recover when we eventually get some rain. Whether baths are better than showers depends on how much water you put in the bath vs. how long you it takes you to shower.....

Re: Water shortage - liz (9th Jul 2018 - 13:40:12) Equipment failure due to high demand. Yes this higher demand will impact on reservoirs - that is what they are there for! The point is the water companies believe at present there is sufficient to cope with this higher demand.

Re: Water shortage - James (9th Jul 2018 - 17:30:16) I have considerable knowledge of the water industry. Our water locally does not come from reservoirs, but from bore holes. We do not have a water shortage where we are and the local companies are not worried about it running out. However, people are watering gardens, taking 2 showers a day instead of one, filling pools, washing extra things to make the most of drying time outdoors etc. We are all guilty of using extra water in hot weather. The water companies are pumping water into the system at peak capacity, but it is being taken out of the system by consumers at a very high rate - hence the low water pressure and why you will notice there is plenty of water available at non-peak times. The low pressure can make pumping station computers think there is a problem and temporarily shut down as a safety measure - this is when water can stop coming from our taps altogether until it is checked out. So there is plenty of water, but we are causing the low pressure etc. Other parts of the country might have Emory reservoirs, but not here. Just slow down on your use and stop wasting water.

I do not play golf either as too much water is used for watering the golf course. Perhaps if I post under the name of Charles I would attract less of the patronising comments!

She has told us how she is saving water and not demanded others do likewise. My view is that it is not all necessary just yet and people shouldn't worry but, in general, saving water cant be a bad thing.

I for one agree with Helen, who in my mind has shown common sense as to what could turn into a real problem in a very short time if we get no rain. No one is saying don't use water, just while this heatwave goes on be a little more careful with your usage. Not too much to ask really. It saddens me that some people think about nothing but themselves and what they want, instead of the bigger picture. These people will be the first and loudest to complain if there is no water. A healthy debate , yes, bully tactics, no.

Just because "it happens" doesn't make it acceptable. I note you haven't answered my question directly.
