broadband

hi I am just out of the broadband contract with Talk Talk.
Wondered what sort of speeds other users are getting with their broadband and if it is worth changing suppliers.

Talk Talk are rated fairly low amongst ISP's so a change would be good but speed is determined by many other factors over and above which supplier and then package or type ADSL/VDSL you go for. In short whom ever you go for will likely deliver the same speed or thereabouts unless your on ADSL now and have VDSL (Fiber) available to you. Reliability, Service and pricing (careful with the last one, talk talk play on pricing) though is why you change supplier as they are all different in those areas

Purely supplier I would recommend binning Talk Talk and going PlusNet, PlusNet rides on the BT backbone, its cheaper than BT and the service is good.

Do bear in mind that everything from the distance to the exchange, your internal wiring/socket, WiFi environment, and even PC network drivers or device OS all have a hand in the blame the ISP for crap speeds game. The only yard stick is to find out via the likes of https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ using your telephone number to get what you could/should be getting and then play that against what you are getting, any big differences means an issue somewhere on the route from your PC to the exchange. Sadly if your getting what that site says should be available to you then its game over for improvement till BT etc do stuff to your Cabinet etc.

Hi,
I'm with BT infinity (fibre optic broadband) and get regular download speeds around 40Mb.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your replies, thinking about BT, have to admit Talk Talk are pretty poor!!

TalkTalk and Sky are both LLU (Local Loop Unbundled) at the Liphook exchange meaning they have there own kit in the exchange building and apart from the cable from the exchange to your house they don't use BT/Openreach. I wouldn't touch TalkTalk with a bargepole myself and wasn't overly impressed with the ADSL from Sky. Switched to Fibre with PlusNet earlier this year and now get a variable 30-40mbps download speed, usually in the upper area of that range.

Check moneysavingexpert to see if there are any good deals!

HI,i am with TalkTalk and normally get download speeds in excess of 52 Mbps, also i have a very competetive package and have had good service,it would be worth having a word with TT and seeing how great a deal you can get if you threaten to leave.
Good luck,Fred ..

I've been with TalkTalk for many years, originally Lineone.
I must say that I have had very few problems with them over that time.
Did have trouble with the line dropping out, I advised them that it was the router, after five phone calls to India, they said that an engineer had to call, to check it as they do not just send routers out, the engineer came all the way from Brighton, he was in the house five minutes, told me is was the router and said he would have to order one. That came three days later, no more problems. So I would still recommend them. I have speeds of 72-78mb. doesn't seem to drop below that, even on the School Holidays.

The speeds you will get is based on the distance your home is from the exchange, so anyone saying ISP name & I get X speed is irrelevant unless you happen to live next door to them. Also whilst am sure a lot of people get decent service from them, on average and easily researchable online the likes of TalkTalk and Sky consistently get the lower ratings.

Hi Sarah,

Will you very kindly let us know which ISP you decide on and your opinion of it.

Thanks,John ...
