Hello Margaret,

Have you tried the Citizens Advice Bureau? You can call them on
0344 4111306 or 01420 477005. They also have a website

citizensadviceeasthampshire.org.uk/contact/...

I assume that you have asked your GP if they can assist.

I hope this helps.

best wishes,
Allison

Hi Margaret,
How frustrating! Your gp can refer For a home OT assessment and they should be able to help. I would suggest you call your GP and tell them you need an urgent referral to the OT.

If you have no family to support you with pursuing this you are also able to access advocacy support.

You can apply for a disabled facilities grant from your local council. Go to the GOV.CO.UK for more information.
It enables you to make changes to your home, for example to: ... improve access to rooms and facilities - eg stairlifts or a downstairs bathroom. ... A Disabled Facilities Grant won’t affect any benefits you get.

I hope this is of some help to you Margaret.

Hello Margaret
An Occupational Therapist will assess and advise for this sort of thing as they might identify other needs you have regarding mobility.
I’ve checked with my colleagues as I work in a related area and they say that you need a referral to social services.
Perhaps citizens advice can give you the number.

Margaret, what sort of help are you needing?

Re: help
- Helen (27th Jun 2018 - 09:06:03)

As it appears you are in a private rental and the landlord does not want a ramp or is refusing to pay for it your only option might be to go on the list for an adapted council flat.

Re: help
- liz (27th Jun 2018 - 09:44:30)

Would you mind saying why the council will not give you a disabled facilities grant?

Re: help
- Helen (27th Jun 2018 - 10:55:33)

I believe that grant only applies to indoor improvements
If the landlord does not allow her to do this what can she do? The ramp is for outside the flat.

Hi Margaret,

The Equalities Act 2010 provides you with certain rights, but I’m not clear how exactly they will help you practically if your landlord isn’t being helpful.
Recent changes to Landlord Law mean that the local authority can impose penalties on a landlord who isn’t maintaining a property to standard and I think this includes making reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities, so it’s worth speaking to them.
On a less positive note, it seems a landlord only has to make ‘non permanent’ changes to the property that can be ‘undone’ when you go. Beyond that and subject to following the correct procedures (you will need advice on this) you may seek his permission to carry out more permanent jobs like concrete ramps etc, but you’ll definitely need advice first as most leases are very strict about not allowing you to interfere with any of the fixtures, fittings or make any alterations without express permission, so I’d go straight to either the CAB or local authority (environmental health department) and get their help and advice.

Just follow the steps and you’ll be OK (please excuse the poor pun).

thank you for all the advice just got keep trying

Re: help
- liz (27th Jun 2018 - 12:12:27)

I don't think the facilities grant is restricted to indoors. The landlord is not being helpful, but it is not clear that he has actually objected to anything.

I am surprised the CAB could not be of more help if they know the full details.

Re: help
- helen (27th Jun 2018 - 12:51:33)

I have looked up the latest advice and it seems for a permanent outdoor
ramp grant the landlord has to agree to this to be given the grant, perhaps even planning applied for. There are some temporary ramps made of rubber? would that be of any use?

Margaret, what help are you asking for?

Can you tell us why the landlord won't help - what are his reasons?

Are you on the council waiting list for an adapted flat?

Re: help
- helen (27th Jun 2018 - 23:34:49)

Dawn if you read Margarets' post she is asking for a ramp.
