Sainsburys Roundabout
- Dawn Hoskins (14th Jun 2018 - 16:19:39)

Do Sainsbury's sponsor the roundabout?

It used to have lovely shrubs planted on it but the grass and weeds have overgrown the shrubs to the point where you almost can't see them.

Just wondering who originally planted it up

Dawn,

I really agree with you. The Sainsbury’s roundabout lets the whole village down. When you think of all the voluntary work that Liphook in bloom do to make every other border, bed etc look so brilliant every year it is just very sad. The roundabout by the new estate, Maple, looks as though it’s getting no attention as well.

We should ask Sainsbury’s if they are responsible for theirs.

Lizzy.

Yes we should petition them to provide the upkeep.

If Sainsburys do sponsor the roundabout or have a planning commitment to maintain then yes, they should meet their responsibilities as part of the village community.

However, if they do not why do you expect them to meet the cost? After all they are a business, albeit a big one so if you set the precedent here, do you expect Sainsburys to meet similar cost burdens elsewhere in the country?

Lets not forget, they are a business out to make profit, we are free to choose whether to use them or not but principally they have an obligation to their staff and owners to make profit. THEY ARE NOT A CHARITY.

It may be that the local authority or highways are responsible in which case we know they have no money so unless as members of the public we are prepared to pay more taxes we are just going to have to put up with it.

Of course Dawn, instead of organising a petition, you could organise a work party?

Across the whole of the south of England council land and roadside verges are unkempt. Not rocket science, the authorities have limited funds, that’s what austerity means! The way this country is being run it’s not going to get better any day soon either

It depends what you mean by unkempt. It is expensive and unnecessary to keep all verges and roundabouts in a neat "parks and gardens" style unless there is a safety issue. Keeping them litter free might not be a bad thing though! (And before anyone starts this is not an attack on the lovely flowerbeds and baskets looked after by Liphook in Bloom!)

I am a fan of the 'unkempt' look. certainly far better for wildlife than manicured beds and lawns

Totally agree with you Sarah. It looks fine as it is. Leave it alone!!

Unless for safety reasons, keeping verges natural helps the wild flowers to grow which in turn helps the Bees!
Britain's wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate, REALLY, it needs all the help it can get.
