bohunt consultation day
- Jane (3rd Feb 2005 - 21:44:45)

Anyone any views on Bohunt's consultation day for years 9 and 11 yesterday? This week's Liphook Herald has a very critical front page article. The headmaster has defended his decision, saying it all went very smoothly. But what do the consumers (including those who had to make alternative child care arrangements and/or take a day off work to be there and/or simply couldn't make it) think?

I have not read the Herald article but we all knew about this day well in advance as it was in the Bohunt school calendar issued last year so it was up to us as parents to make the time to attend. Let's face it, it's only once per year!

People have complained bitterley in the past that the evening sessions were congested and often overran by more than an hour so I suppose the school wanted to address those complaints by increasing the amount of time for the event.

I wonder, if this had been an independant school, whether anyone would have complained? Independant schools have a habit of doing open day consultations during week days and some will even try and mess up your weekend to fit them in!

Two teachers over running by more than 40 minutes on the allocated times, one teacher gone home before our appointment and one signature from the teacher on my sons slip but not on hers therefore not time to fit us in.
Brilliant, typical Bohunt a great day out for all the family and according to the "Managing Director" (sorry they used to be called Headmasters) it all went smoothly.
Still never mind, heads down lets concentrate on the important issue getting the school higher up the league table for next season must not get relegated think of the money lost from Sky Sports.
Imagine the size of Bohunts carpet!

I agree that as parents we did have sufficient notification of the open day plans and should have let the school know before now of any difficulties etc.

My main opposition is the lack of work given to my yr 8 child - he had finished by 9.30 (started at 8.45) and you can imagine the response I got when I said " Now look at the BBC website..." Needless to say when his mate called at 10 they were off to the shops! I did reign him in much to his surprise when he got back and made him do some maths I set him, but not many parents would have had time to do this.

We'll see what happens on 1st March when the next open day happens!

As a student in year 11 I feel this day was a total waste of time. It fitted my parents much better to do the usual evening consultation day so both parents could attend and discuss my progress. My Mum was working so my Dad had to miss some crucial hours of running a business to come along to Bohunt... and what did we find? The english department running 35 minutes late...and so we almost missed other appointments made. This is not a good way of reducing stress for teachers! Having to cram in more pupils in less allocated times. Wat planet is Mr Taylor-Bennet on? I had no work set over the day as I was meant to be at school for the consultation, however that was over with 1 1/2 hours so what happens to the rest of the 5 hours a school day usually takes up? As I'm sure you are aware year 11 is a critical years for any student, and to waste a day of valuable education like this is well, just spitful on Mr Taylor-Bennet's behalf.
I have read the article in The Herald, and feel it recognises peoples views on how pointless and inconvinient this day was.
Lastley I feel our Head teacher is a failure at notifying parents of there childrens progress due to stupid ideas (which in many peoples views fail) such as Wednesdays 2nd consulatation ''day''!

Shall we e-mail him a link to this discussion?

Dear Year 11,

Your views are justified and I can understand your frustration and it is a credit to you that you recognised that valuable study time was lost.

However, please can I suggest that for the next consultation day you spend some time brushing up on your 'spelling' as there were an awful lot of mistakes in your post.

This is not meant in a harmful way but something I have noticed from my own son's work - his spelling is terrible and he does not read his work before submitting which was drummed into me at school. Presentation really does count in the big wide world.

Good luck with your studies.

Helen - our year 11 puts quite a few regular posters to shame when it comes to spelling and grammar ;) And why on earth is anyone in school complaining that they had the day off??????
