Alice Holt Forest - Future Sell-Off & Local Support
- Phil (29th Jan 2011 - 10:20:24)

Dear all

As you may be aware, the planned sell-off of forest land could impact locally, in that Allice Holt Forest MAY be sold-off.

The attached link gives further details, including how to support the 'Save Britains Forests' campaign via Facebook.

Many folk here in Liphook enjoy access to Alice Holt. You may therefore wish to add your support so that your family can in the future still have the same level of access.

Kind regards,

PMN

The Government is consulting on the future of all Forestry Commission woodland, including Iron Hill, Queens Elizabeth Country Park, Alice Holt plus a number of other small woods.

Whilst they say they will first offer them to local communities to buy and only after that, offer them on 150 year leases to the private sector this is in effect a sell of. The Government will offer fine words about maintaining access but this doesn't extend to car parking, biking etc.

The Forestry Commission manage the woods for us and are accountable to us, under any other ownership we will not have a voice. If you want to save our forests you can join the campain:

www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/save-our-forests

write to your MP: Damian Hinds or complete the consultation document on the Forestry Commission web site but if you are opposed to the sale ensure you object to all; charities can't afford it, communities can't afford it and private owners can but it will be at cost to us!

Kevin, you had started a new thread, I guess you had not found this one. So, I have added it to it for you.

Is QE effected? It's owned by Hampshire County Council.

Yes, QE is included for consideration for sale.

County Council manage the visitor centre and Butser but the actual woodland is owned and managed by the Forestry Commission.

This Saturday (12th Feb) there will be a peaceful protest in Alice Holt Forest to draw media attention in the area to the Government's plans to sell off our publicly owned woodlands. Supporters will be meeting at the cafe in the woods at 11am. Please tell your fellow dog-walkers/running partners/friends and family.

Anybody who enjoys using Alice Holt Forest, Bourne Wood, Crooksbury Common, Queen Elizabeth Country Park or any other Forestry Commission woodland is invited. The Farnham Herald will be in attendance as well as members of the Alice Holt Community Forum and Transition Farnham. Jeremy Hunt MP has also been invited.
