Liphook Women's Institute
- Cath (17th Jan 2011 - 23:04:50)
Hi. The Liphook WI have their first meeting of the year this Wednesday evening. We are meeting at The Peak Centre at 7.30pm - we usually meet at the Village Hall on the third Wednesday of the month - but this month - for one month only we're at the Peak Centre. I joined a couple of years ago and I'm sure they wouldn't mind me saying I've brought down the average age somewhat...they are the nicest bunch of women - really welcoming to newcomers of all ages and they invite really interesting people to come and speak to them. Here is a list of what is coming up this year:
19 January - Liphook Now and Then - Ian Baker
16 February - Gardening for 2011 - Ann Wright
16 March - Surrey Safari - Geoff Lunn
20 April - The future of Hindhead - Caroline Wright
18 May - Resolutions Meeting (Quiz/wine/cheese)
15 June - Outing to Gardens
20 July - My life with M&S (working with produce and horticulture) - Nancy Ramsden
17 August - Members' Meeting
21 September - Trading Standards - Julie Gallagher
19 October - Loosing the Thread: A textile journey - Dee Thomas
16 November - Presentations for Christmas - Jean Pannell
21 December - It's Christmas Time Again
So if you feel like trying something different and meeting some really interesting local women - come and join us and see for yourself.

Thank you Catherine for that fulsome praise - it's good to know that we're welcoming and warm.
What Cath didn't say, was that this is a big year for us as it's our 90th birthday - making us one of the earliest groups in the country.
We have a lot of celebrations planned, so if you're thinking of joining us, now's the time to give us a whirl.
Gwenda Pate. President, Liphook W.I.

Hello Liphook Ladies,
Would you be interested in a short talk about the Gurkhas and their historical connections with Britain and the British Army?
As a daughter of a Gurkha and married to one who is still serving the Crown,I have belonged to a few ladies groups where a talk on these brave men have always been well received.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are at all interested...I can understand if you are not as it is not everybody's cup of tea.
Sudha.

We would be very interested to hear a speaker on the life and times of a Ghurka. It's just the sort of thing we like to have on our varied programme. Unfortunately the programme for 2011 has already been drawn up and printed, but as a subject for next year it would be great. perhaps you'd like to contact us in October, when we begin our planning for the following year, and I'll certainly keep your details on our books.
Thank you for getting in touch with us.
Gwenda

Dear Sudha
This is why I think this talkback is such an important forum. What other way would we have found that someone local had such an interesting subject to come and speak to us about. Please do contact Gwenda as I for one would be super interested in hearing you talk on this subject in 2012.
Ian Baker came last month with some really amazing slides of Liphook over the last 90 years. For someone pretty new to the area it was so interesting to see some of the old shops and houses I had heard about from others who have lived here a long time which are no more.
