Egrets? I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention.

There were 2 around in the Park last year so maybe they are the same ones.

A single Egret has been visiting our river around Christmas time, for the last five years (to my knowledge).

He/she seems to arrive at Spring Pond (Woolmer Lane) late December and then progresses up-river towards Radford Park, before flying away a few weks later.

I think this is the first winter that two birds have been visiting our area.

One egret seen in the river Wey near the Mill House in Bramshott in January last year when the weather was very bad. Seen once again in the same place in December -also in the bad weather. Heron often seen in the same place (in the better weather!).

The distinction between a heron and an egret is rather vague, and depends more on appearance than biology. The word "egret" comes from the French word "aigrette" that means both "silver heron" and "brush," referring to the long filamentous feathers that seem to cascade down an egret's back during the breeding season.

Egret seen again this Saturday fishing in Bramshott. It caught something - which wasn't a fish, could it have been an elver? Are there any in the Wey and is it the right time of year?
