New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Julie (30th Dec 2017  18:21:46)

I realise that this doesn't strictly come under Liphook but a lot of Liphook residents go through here. I've just been through the new roundabouts at Whitehill and despite there being loads of space on both sides of all the roads and trees are being cleared for a distance towards Greatham, there seems to be no provision for cycle lanes. Now motorists don't seem to like cyclists and councils want people to not use their cars so much so what bright spark didn't think to put in a cycle lane or 2? Even short ones would be something to enlarge on later. I have no idea who to contact to suggest this so hopefully one of your readers is in a position to either look into or speak to someone who can look into this

Forget about cyclists the real problem is 4,000+ new homes extra leisure facilities(Cinema, Leisure Centre) and extra business. But guess what no new transport links. We need a dual carriageway from the new roundabout to the A3.

Not sure if they count the new track they laid from Whitehill Roundabout to Greatham Roundabout as a 'cycle lane'?

It was constructed as part of the Shipwrights Way and runs parallel with the A325. The surface is packed aggregate so not sure if its suitable for road bikes.

Are they going to build a cycle lane on the new stretch of road?

I have cycled down the Shipwrights Way parallel to the A325, and it is usable with a road bike (but it is not tarmac), however, a more friendly route would be via Drift Road, and then re-join the A325 at the bottom.

Cycle routes are an important part of any redevelopment program. It seems that no planning has been made for any cycle routes whatsoever.

With all the new homes and limited parking, councils expect people to walk to work in the new housing / business environment.

So, thousands of new homes, and no cycle routes. Diabolical.

Whoever has overlooked this important fact needs sacking.

Bordon Eco Town, a vision of paradise. The politicians in the parasite infested Palace of Westminster (yes they've really got a bug infestation) promised millions of green pounds to any town council that would take the kings shilling and dare to dream. Bordon politicians agreed to the stipulated 5,500 new houses on greenbelt and ex army land. Offer, accepted, contracts signed. Then the shilling became sixpence as the recession bit, then thruppence as aiding elite tax avoidance in the BVI became the government's priority and green transport was removed from the equation altogether by the incoming Tory government. Now, a green town doesn't need any green transport policy at all! Building regulations were relaxed, promises became vague and unenforceable as the money dried up and promises were reassessed.

From what I can see the promises now amount to a bare minimum of 5,500 new minimum sized houses, a train station for commuters who want a job, which is situated suitably close in that other growth enclosure, Liphook, just up the road by car and a new dual carriageway to help get you away from Bordon. A small nature enclosure or two on what used to be rolling countryside, a wooden boardwalk, the Shipwrights Way (a muddy path which was happening anyway) and of course, icing on the cake, a free exhibition on CO2 and the local recycling strategy (which has been scuppered by the Third World who are refusing to accept any more of of our trash mountains). The youth won't be bored out of their minds. It'll all end well for sure.

Oldie,
Love it very true and precise summary

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- h (4th Jan 2018  10:20:35)

The last labour goverment spent the money on the exo town idea just
before the election in a bid to regain power, there was actually quite a large sum given to EHDC who spent it all on consultants not on building
social housing, Their idea was that the developers would then build these dream eco homes. Of course not, far too expensive to build, so only reams of ordinary housing will get built. The railway for Bordon will only be built if enough commuters living there demand it and the Government subsidises it.

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- P Weyland (4th Jan 2018  10:52:27)

In their defence, there is already a cycle lane from Whitehill Roundabout up as far as Chalet Hill.

As the 'old A325' through Bordon will be a fairly quiet road I assume they decided it will be a safe route to get through Bordon.

They have also constructed cycle lanes from the old Fire Station crossroads up to the new roundabout North of Bordon.

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Richard (4th Jan 2018  11:46:10)

The new relief road follows the old railway for parts of it...

I suspect the people who are holding out for a revitalized rail link are going to be disappointed

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- James (4th Jan 2018  13:32:52)

Oldie, I seem to recall that the 'Eco Town's' keenest supporters were district councillors from outside Bordon and Whitehill, led by Ferris Cowper, who saw it as a way of keeping new housing away from their own patch!

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Adrian (4th Jan 2018  14:11:15)

Oldie, you sadly mis-informed on several points, the building is being done on the old army land and is thererfore brownfield development, there is no greenbelt as we don't have greenbelt in Bordon.
I agree that people will come to Liphook to get the train but there is no dual carriage way out of Bordon(that whats needed).

- Mr Paddy's Daddyp (4th Jan 2018  15:27:59)

How does any logical person expect the so called Eco town to ever work ??

Do the maths as is said - 5500 new homes say on average with 3 people in each works out to 16500 people - that is more than the population of Petersfield - but with none of it's infrastructure.

Allegedly residents were consulted about the desirability of a Railway spur to Bordon - I have yet to meet anyone who was actually asked.

And you are worried about roundabouts !!

I wonder how it will be in ten years time ?

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Adrian (5th Jan 2018  22:34:53)

Mr Paddy you're right 16,500 people and no infrastructure to get them in and out of Bordon. Not to mention the idea to bring lots of people from a 20 mile radius to use the new town centre being built. There was never any chance of a railway due to the massive set up costs and the need for constant subsidy from government. This lack of planning can be laid at the door of the head of the regeneration committee Counciller MR MAD CAREW.

At least I am not the only one to name and shame this man. Steve Pearce is the other person who has wasted huge amounts of money on this farce.Consultations by the dozen and pie in the sky facilities. This is big business and too big budgets for some little councillors untrained for the amounts involved.
And for those liphook residents who think it won't affect them ,get real ,all the extra traffic going thru to schools and the stations it will have big effects on "village " life.

Replying to Ick, This is one big fear that residents in Liphook have regarding the so-called eco town; that commuters who only work in London will use the Liphook station for economic reasons, but, oh dear, where to park one`s car? I know, let`s use all the side roads around the station area, Newtown, Berg Estate, Portsmouth Road,
Station Road if it`s possible; let`s fill up the town car park in Station Road so that Liphook residents can`t use it for their local shopping. Could have thought about a bigger station car park, but rail companies want to charge extortionate prices on top off the now increased rail fare. Now we have two large new office blocks going up along Midhurst Road; any jobs to be had there when it is finished? I wonder. Why are there no new office blocks being built in Bordon, the"Eco town" ? Maybe commuters will be able to use the parking allocated for the new offices!!
What a shambles.

I rode past the Whitehill end of the new relief road and it looks like they're putting in a fairly wide cycle lane/mixed usage.

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Anon (10th Jan 2018  14:57:56)

At the NDP meeting last night it was stated that because of the poor train service from Liphook (one an hour) a lot of Bordon commuters go to Haslemere.

The question is which way? Through Liphook or over Hindhead!

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Mr Paddy's Daddy (10th Jan 2018  15:29:25)

Thank goodness for that then.

You, and the thousands who will move to Bordon Whitehill, will be able to cycle to and from the non existent Station, Shops, and newly created jobs with ease.

Will Katie Melua also re-record her 2005 hit single - revised title of course ?

Happy Days

Just a note re the previous post. The 2 large office blocks built on land by Liphook station, which should have been used to create more parking for rail users, has actually been used by EHDC to build offices for rent. No doubt at some point EHDC will urge us to use the railways as part of an integrated transport plan but as long as local government makes such barmy decisions we have no hope of any integrated transport system.

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill
- Adrian (11th Jan 2018  18:06:51)

In reply to Anon, the one train an hour is the off peak service at peak times before 0900 there are alot more 2-3 an hour and thats when commuters catch the train. As for going to Haslemere they do have more trains but the station carpark is season ticket holders only with a waiting list all the other nearby car parks(except wey hill which fills up quickly) have to be paid. So they will come to liphook and fill up all the side roads for free parking.

I thought most cyclists these days just used the pavement. From what I’ve heard I would be more worried about getting my bike wheels knicked at the traffic lights when cycling in bordon

Re: New roundabouts at Whitehill

Someone mentioned new offices, the new ones across from Pinewood Village have 3 parking spaces per unit but around 8 bodies per unit. We can all see that working well, not!
