Xmas train service
- Adrian (20th Dec 2017 07:44:01)
Another super idea from south western railway. Between xmas and new year 27-29 Dec they are running a Saturday service but charging peak time fares.

Someone has to pay for this marvellous new franchise. After all who could possibly want to travel on the railway over the holiday period so why not charge as much as you can from those that have to.
I say this tongue in cheek! If true, it seems like a PR shot in the foot from SW trains. Scrooge is alive and well.

On a positive, just think..... you will be able to claim some of your fare back as part of the delay repay system. The chances of them managing to run even a reduced service over the festive period are remote.........

So we pay peak price even if travelling off-peak?
That's just plain wrong!

A footnote to the Xmas travel woes. Apart from no trains on Xmas day and Boxing day (what about those that have to work over the Xmas period?) todays trains (22nd) are subject to delay because of a shortage of train crew? It's unbelievable that basic rostering can't be done by the new South Western franchise. This is fundamental to running anything!
As another footnote, I had a brief conversation with an about to retire South Western train driver of a train at Clapham Junction last week. He was leaning out of his cab, rolling his eyes as hundreds of people tried to cram onto a too short train. I was pulling his leg about Southern drivers £50k pay package. We're already on that, £65k with overtime, was his reply!
My comment was you'll be flying passenger planes next on those salaries. My point: how can a company which pays £50k for drivers not have enough of them. Many readers of this post can only dream of £50k salaries. Can't be that bad a job or are drivers so expensive to employ train companies don't want to employ enough of them?
Crucially why would anyone on £65k with overtime want to work over the Xmas period! Or maybe its the guards missing from the train crew?
Either way there will be lots of local Liphook people waiting / delayed hours after 2pm today because not enough train crew are available! Shameful.

I would love to drive a train over Xmas! PS Prime Minister Wilson brother used to drive trains on South West trains. A great job!

Perhaps you should change your job then iac. But I expect you would go off the idea when a person jumps out in front of you which happens quite a bit.

It must be awful to have someone jump in front of a train but without the statistics to hand it must be possible for the vast majority of drivers to have a career without being exposed to such stress. I still think a train drivers job, like many others, is interesting and worthwhile even with the inevitable downsides.
