Large area control centres..how hopeless!
- Alex Smith (26th Jan 2005 - 21:22:37)

I was watching South today several days ago and heard that the government is planning on creating several large control rooms for the UK rather than reasonably small regional ones for the emergency services.
I can just imagine how much havoc and possibly loss of life this would cause.

Does anyone else think it is a ridiculous suggestion??

Knowing someone that works in one of these centres, I had a long chat about such effects. The reult was, that far from slowing down the process, it does in fact speed things up.

The response time is quicker for all emergency services including the Lifeboats. (Not that we have many of those in Liphook)

The new technology, that we must all embrace or die as dinosaurs, has almost halved the response time. The bigger problem is the lack of emergency service vehicles and staff, but I was assured that this will get better. Once the two are running in tandem things, as they say, can only get better.

Response times can't be quicker when they are closing down Bordon Fire Station!!!
As 2 pumps (fire engines) are required for a standard house fire! How many pumps do we have in Liphook... 1. So the other is going to have to come form Haslemere or Grayshott. Brilliant that is going to make things better isn't it!
I don't think so.
But on this note may i applaud Liphooks on call fire figther as they do a terrific job, and reach many fires promptly. Including our own car fire which was a response time of about 4-5 minutes! Brilliant lads!

Alex,
The response time will be handled a lot quicker at the main centre, but i agree, if they are closing a Fire Station locally, then the response time for an appliance will be slower.

Now they are thinking about selling off the "Green Goddess' perhaps we should buy one for Liphook, but then again, the response time for one of these machines to reach a fire would be about three hours and that's if the fire is in the Square.!!!!!

Also a great fan of our local fire team, following the brilliant way they handled our house fire last year. They got here in about five minutes; and the Grayshott team weren't far behind them. We're very lucky to have them.

Rob.

Indeed, they are exceptional seeing as I know a few firemen that live close to the outskirts of Liphook. 5 minutes for your house fire is impressive as they have to come from their homes...to the station...wait for 5 people to arrive…then whiz off to the needed location.
Another good thing I have noticed about Liphook Fire and Rescue service is the amount they help the community and the National Fire Benevolent Fund (NFBF) in fundraising activities, such as their regular car washes…and I also saw them collecting outside Sainsbury’s for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Appeal a while back.

People dont panic...... I am a local fire fighter. The station that is closing is a MOD fire station at Bordon. It only covers MOD area not the local area. There is a station at bordon witch has 3 appliances for the local area. This station is not closing.......
Response times in liphook are good and 80% of the time the fire engine in liphook is out the doors within 4 minutes.
