Sainsbury’s car park
- Annabelle Dickens (27th Nov 2017  16:25:36)

Anyone know what’s happening to the car park, is it just being re-surfaced or is it a new lay out?
Just curious!!!

Just resurfacing by the look of it and a great job they are doing too!

Yes Sainsburys are doing really well organising the car park with helpful people to direct traffic.
Not so helpful was the police car (!!) that blasted an elderly lady with their horn when she was driving the wrong way, they were laughing their heads off, as were the traffic directors. Not the best way to treat someone who was confused and probably panicked after being honked at, a little empathy needed

I also witnessed this event. It's a typical 'delusion of grandeur' situation where people think they have more power than they do and so act like they answer to no one. The men 'directing' the traffic were as useful as chocolate teapots and witnessing this behaviour really saddened me. As for the police (who I have a huge repeat for in general) - perhaps it answers the question as to why a lot of people have lost respect for them. The car park layout was a little confusing and although a great job has been done to limit disruption by the people carrying out the work, the extra help was little to no help at all.

Sarah - Perhaps if the "elderly lady" was that confused and subject to panic at the sound of a car horn maybe she should not have been driving in the first place.

Well the special prize of the day goes to -d for the most discourteous post of the day.
I would think anyone would panic if a police car honked their horn at you.
Also if you were unaware to the upheaval in Sainsbury's car park it would throw you a bit.

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- d (30th Nov 2017  12:33:04)

Not in any way discourteous - realistic.

No, discourteous, to say the least. But perhaps you have never made a mistake..

More to the point it doesn't appear that Sainsbury's gave any prior notice that the car park was going to be closed off on this scale. Driving in on Monday evening in the dark was disorientating as there was no visible signage nor directions. Cars honking and coming at you from all sides.

Pretty poor customer service from Sainsbury's in my opinion. No Apologies for any inconvenience sign etc, so voting with my feet and shopping elsewhere for a bit...

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- Sarah (30th Nov 2017  19:13:50)

D - I hope you will be handing in your driving licence when you turn 70... anyone would have been panicked by a police horn being blasted at you, they were right behind her and she was trying to exit the car park in the usual manner, as other posters have noted there were no signs warning of the change in exit. I am a perfectly capable driver and I had to look around to be sure which way to leave the car park as it was very unclear.

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- d (30th Nov 2017  20:22:47)

Sarah - Sorry to disappoint you but I am already well past 70 and have a clean licence.

As a matter of interest I was a police driver!

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- A (1st Dec 2017  08:18:09)

Ah d, it all makes sense now! You're trying to defend the appalling behaviour of your old profession. Surely you must appreciate that us non police folk had a clearly misguided view that the police were there to help the public, not mock them? If they had a genuine concern over her driving ability why did they not stop her and ask to speak to her? I'm a young (ish) driver with 15 years road experience, a clean licence, perfect eyesight and never had even a tiny scratch to my car and yet I found the layout very confusing.
It would seem the police are far more judgemental than previously thought!

You and the 'laughing policemen' are not doing much for police PR.

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- Sarah (1st Dec 2017  17:52:32)

Indeed D a police driver, well it explains so much, obviously in police college they teach you to be rude to other drivers and frighten little old ladies, charming, marvellous our taxes are being used so well, I hope you are enjoying the generous police pension too....

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- Richard (1st Dec 2017  21:13:35)

Perhaps the Policeman's behaviour is a symptom of declining training time. I heard from a traffic policeman I knew a few years ago that the Police Class 1 course at Hendon had been reduced from 6 weeks to 3 weeks duration. This does not improve their driving skills, and if other training is suffering similar cuts, it will end up with a less well-trained police force than this country needs. American style policing anyone?

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- Isn (2nd Dec 2017  08:09:22)

Anyone over 70 should take a competency based booster driving test once a year as many of them absolutely shouldn’t be allowed to drive. Unfortunately it is nature that as you get older your faculties deteriorate so we really should have mandatory testing to ensure oldies are still safe to be on our roads.

Re: Sainsbury’s car park
- D (2nd Dec 2017  12:18:57)

Looking at statistics will show that a larger percentage of accidents are caused by youthful drivers than "oldies"

Would Sarah have been so keen to knock the police driver if he had taken similar action towards one of our local boy racers?

- Mary W (2nd Dec 2017  12:35:09)

I am older than all of you and I have passed the ROSPA advanced motoring test for the second time. A timed hour and a half on different types of roads with the examiner being a retired police fast response tutor. Excellent for all the people who think they’re such good drivers because they are the ‘magic’ young.
Everyone should take it before they’re let loose on the roads. And, incidentally, it has to be retaken every 3 years, (not like IAM) so no chance of slipping back into all those bad habits - one hand on the wheel while you caress the gear lever or your girl friend’s knee...
