Can you recommend pet (dog) insurance?
- Jay (3rd Dec 2010 - 15:27:00)
Can anyone recommend a pet (dog) insurance provider - one that actually pays out would be preferred? They are so expensive I would like to be as sure as possible that the money will be well spent and claims not rejected when submitted. Your advice and experiences would be welcomed.

Good question!!
I started with Pinnical - which has now changed to helpucover.
It started with a reasonable cover just over £15- until our dog had a condition that went on for about 18mths. We are now paying £38.41 per mth. Its all relative to how much you claim - healthy dog - trouble free will give you cheap premiums. They have also increased the (excess) charge from £50 to £70, which has precluded me from claiming most visits for examination/treatment for most events, as the charge from vet is usually between £48 and £70!!.
On looking around for a better cover - found that if your dog suffers from a 'previous' condition again it will not be covered by any new insurer - so basically we are stuck with what we have, and they can keep on upping the fees and we either pay it or take the risk of covering all costs ourselves. we have not claimed in nearly 2 years, but the premiums have increased greatly in that time?
Best of luck in finding a suitable insurer.

Have always used Tesco pet insurance.
They have been very good and always paid up.

Not sure how apt this is as its my cat thats insured but as far as pet insurance goes Direct Line are fantastic.
Our lovely little cat Harley (rescued from Battersea in 2005) has had many many problems since we got him including eye cancer, lost toes, absess in his chest and currently a rather unusal case of mast cells and Direct Line have been fab and helped and paid out every time.
The upshot of this is our cat insurance costs more than our house insurance (roughly £20 per month) but the little fella is worth it :-)
Thanks
Jen
