Any small businesses willing to help my son out?
- Gina (10th Nov 2017 - 19:03:23)
Are there any small businesses in the area, that would be willing to offer my son 4 hours a month voluntary work experience for 6 months? This is for his Duke of Edinburgh Silver award,
My son is 14, and attends a local special school, he has various learning difficulties, including Dyslexia, and Sensory processing disorder, for him to be able to complete his DofE Silver, he needs to do 4 hours a month volunteering work experience for 6 months.
He does struggle with loud noises, and his social skills can be limited, but this is something he would like to complete, he passed his Bronze award this year.
If anyone would be kind enough to offer some work experience, your requirements would be to log into his DofE profile, and complete a questionnaire and post a couple of photographs of him completing a task asked of him?
Fingers crossed that someone is able to offer some work experience or offer any suggestions.
I hope the editor would pass my E-mail address onto anyone that requires it.
Thank you so much

Hi
Have had 3 children do the D of E award and as I understand it the voluntary aspect has to be for a charity or person rather than a small business. Some ideas that may be suitable for your son could be doing some gardening/fence painting for an elderly person or walking their dog etc. They can also just write an email or letter and he can take photos too that can be uploaded rather than login themselves.
Good Luck to your son. Its a very worthwhile scheme.

Whilst I can’t ultimately help, I have been involved with a number of children going through their D of E and could offer some suggestions of what they have done previously to see if that provides any other options for you.
Coffee/Tea Run in a hospice primarily to talk to the residents (anything at the Peak Cante)
Littler picking at a local park (does B&L PC have any use?)
Assisting in Charity Shops (Maybe the Liphook one?)
Liphook in Bloom - assisting gardening
Also within the timescales of volunteering the preparation does come into it so having seen for instance the litter picking the child in question demonstrated the issue, met with the local council and then had lots of photos of him picking and then a letter from the local council thanking him.
I hope that the above helps.

Gina
My daughter volunteered at the Bordon Food Bank for her DofE for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. The lady who ran it was so lovely and helpful, my daughter gained a great deal of experience and knowledge and met some lovely people too.
It's run from St Marks Church by the Forest Centre, I know there always looking for volunteers.

The other option is the cookie bar in Hindhead - they are a social enterprise associated with stepping stones school and the coins foundation and have taken on various DoE students in the past. Talk to Debbie or Alison who are both lovely.
