Christmas at the beginning of November
- Scrooge (6th Nov 2017 - 18:58:39)

Can't believe The Royal Anchor has got a Christmas Tree up already!!! For goodness sake it's the 6th November, CRAZY

Nothing like a bit of festive spirit Scrooge!!! Ho Ho Ho!!!

Plenty of festive spirit for the festive season which is not the beginning of November

I drove past tonight and it made me smile to see such a lovely sparkling tree in the window. I love Christmas and for a business I think there is nothing wrong with having it up in November to promote the seasonal offers. Very pretty and nice to see it in the main window for all the village to enjoy on foot or by car.

Mince pies have been in the food stores since August and have merely replaced hot cross buns which seemingly went on sale in February.

More fools the public for being taken in by this blatant commercial exploitation of the festive season. Not a church goer myself but I can see that the real message of Christmas has all but disappeared; business now sees it as one big profit boosting opportunity to be extended for the maximum possible time

Absolutely love Christmas and work in retail where I get to be immersed in it for a couple of months each year! At my work, we have already sold a large number of artificial Christmas trees and plenty (and I do mean plenty!!) of decorations .. so those of you moaning about it on here are fortunately in the minority according to my experience.
Don't worry, it will all be over in less than 7 weeks, but in the meantime, enjoy!!!!

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- I (8th Nov 2017 - 09:19:16)

L - I expect not many of them will be putting their decorations and trees UP at the beginning of November though.

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- Ann (8th Nov 2017 - 09:48:49)

Well said L, they will be moaning next about Easter eggs being on the shelves on Boxing Day!!

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- K (8th Nov 2017 - 10:51:50)

I'm not happy about all the Christmas decorations going up so early, but I believe this is due to the Anchor having it's first Christmas party this weekend! It baffles me that some companies have their Christmas parties so early on, but for whatever reason, it's nice for colleagues or even just groups of friends to get together - it's only 6 weeks away, so really not long.

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- L (8th Nov 2017 - 16:48:35)

Just to clarify my point, in response to I's post; regardless of when the rest of us decide to start enjoying the run up to Christmas, businesses would not be putting up Christmas trees and selling Christmas decorations if there was no demand for it. And the original poster was complaining about a business...Thinking about it, where exactly would be the harm in ANYONE deciding that they wanted to put their decorations up today if they wanted to? Why worry about it? To be honest, there are far more important issues to be concerned about in the world today, rather than complaining about a tree, a few lights and decorations or indeed Christmas adverts!! Chill out and look forward to your Christmas dinner !! Xxx

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November

L, no need to be so defensive, we all have different opinions on the subject. You and your employers are free to exploit the season for maximum financial gain as are The Hungry Horse owners and as you say, there will always be those that are happy for Christmas to be a 2 month event. Likewise I am free to express my opinion it is too early. Lots of things to worry about, big and small but we are all free to have a moan, after all that is what public forums are about.

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- L (8th Nov 2017 - 18:06:36)

I'm really not being defensive, in fact I love a good debate! I am just trying to get things into proportion. And why try and silence me and my opinions (which are just as valid as yours) with such an accusation?! Merry Christmas to you and yours!! Xxx

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- S (8th Nov 2017 - 19:18:10)

I am with Scrooge, by the time December comes round I am so bored of Christmas... on another note does any one else object to the ridiculous concept of shops filling their aisles with christmas 'stuff'. Notable awfulness is christmas bedding and cushions and even christmas door mats. All this drain on the world's resources, so much of it thrown away then in January. Surely not at all in the true spirit of Christmas. If I had money to waste on such nonsense I would donate more to charity, particularly the homeless who would love any bed, even without a cheery santa motif on the duvet cover.

Oh dear 'S' you are definitely a bah humbug!!! Well I hope you have a good Chrimbo!!!

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- helen (9th Nov 2017 - 00:43:07)

I do not think people go into shops to demand Christmas goods in October, so many people buy things now in the sales in Jan for the following Christmas. I would think it is retailer driven the demand. I worked in many shops when I was younger and without fail, most men would leave all their Christmas shopping until Christmas Eve. No one requested Christmas items in October or November.
Christmas -- Christs Mass. That is where the word comes from and the
spirit of Christmas is to commemorate the birth of Jesus who probably
was born around March. The early church chose mid December for the
date because they wished to supersede the Pagan midwinter Festival celebrated in December. It was not until Victorian times that Christmas
started to be celebrated in the way we do today.

L, who is trying to silence you? Just because I have a different opinion to you doesn’t mean I’m trying to silence you! That’s a very ‘defensive ‘ position to take.

How many people commenting have young -ish (or young at heart) kids?

My friend has already booked to go to a winter experience and for the kids to meet father christmas (in December). Isn't it great that for many families, it's still about the experience of having happy family time together, not thinking that buying some flashy expensive toy last minute on Christmas eve and putting it under the tree and getting it all over and done with is 'love'?

If this wasn't being advertised, promoted, decorated now, then it would probably either be too late to find somewhere / fully booked / etc.

Plus some parents (and given how long the 'naughty or nice list' has been going - many always have) can use this time as an opportunity to teach children about giving and behaving nicely in this festive lead up time. Good old fashioned parental bribery!

Really, where is the harm in a business promoting special events (pub christmas meals / parties, meet santa / etc) in advance?

With the exception of maybe big chains and large businesses, many don't make all that much profit until the end of the year, so why not make enough at Christmas time. If people want to buy, why is it wrong for it to be available?

I know the whole USA 'Black Friday' is totally bonkers NOW and I really hope it doesn't come like that here but the term 'black friday' was actually the date businesses started going into the 'black' i.e. in credit.

With some many businesses these days having to close due to the poor economy, just look how many empty shops are there these days.

Can't we please just have a little positive fun in the lead up to Christmas?

Re: Christmas at the beginning of November
- Dave (9th Nov 2017 - 12:09:02)

I for one will be positive about Christmas and enjoy it immensely.... at Christmas. Probably will enjoy the build up in December as well, definitely not at the beginning of November though.

No doubt we will have some silly so and so's in various businesses dressed in Santa hats for the next 6 weeks as well! just to encourage us to spend spend spend! After all is that not what Christmas is now all about?

Prize for the first person that can remember the link between Christmas and Jesus!
