Drone
- NICK (30th Oct 2017 - 15:59:05)

Do we know who was flying the drone over the carnival on Saturday day night ??

Re: Drone
- Jonathan (30th Oct 2017 - 18:36:03)

I doubt they'll own up as, unless they had permission from the CAA, it almost certainly wasn't legal to do so...

Re: Drone
- Paul (30th Oct 2017 - 22:13:02)

^ even more reason to find out exactly who flew it then

Re: Drone
- james (1st Nov 2017 - 01:01:47)

This realy wound me up when i saw 2 drones over the carnival with thousands of people below
Drones are heavy,i have had experiance with profesional drones and they weigh just about the same as a car battery.
If one was to fall out of the sky due to wind, battery failure, human era than it would of killed some one if not seriously injured
I did not see any police at the carnival except for 2 community support officers,I told them and they said they cannot do any thing about it as you can operate a drone from a mile away so it was impossible for them to find the culprit.
I told them it didnt take sherlock holmes to figure it out as they kept landing and taking off behind lyods bank.
I hope the person uploads the footage to youtube and than the police will have to act,so keep a eye on you tube and report it if you see it.
Very very dangerous, people just dont realise how heavy they are and half a mile above crowds of people is dangerous.

Re: Drone
- dave (1st Nov 2017 - 07:15:12)

did anyting happen...no....
i expect you are one of those plane spotting chinook chasing moaners
get a life james.... plenty of other stuff going on .....
oh wait .... a jet just went over a little low.... im on to nats ...

Re: Drone
- lizl (1st Nov 2017 - 08:29:30)

Dave

James is right. Hence the CAA regulations (although you probably think they are just plane spotters!) Sounds like you know who it was.

Re: Drone
- Jonathan (1st Nov 2017 - 09:03:08)

Nothing happened *this time*. Probably nothing happened last time you used your mobile when driving. Nothing happens a lot when you break the law, that doesn't mean it's OK.

The regulations for drone use are there to protect the public in this instance. The rules are quite relaxed at the moment and you don't need to register to fly a drone or be licensed. If however there is a major accident or a fatality as the result of inappropriate drone use I would have thought that the Civil Aviation Authority will tighten up the rules as soon as they possibly can, curtailing everybody's enjoyment. There has already been enough misuse of drones around airports and at higher altitudes than allowed for them to be likely seriously considering their options.

Incidentally, I don't moan about chinooks and jets etc. because they are operating legally. Above Liphook is uncontrolled "Class G" airspace up to 4500ft above sea level where anybody (jets, helicopters, light aircraft etc.) can fly without needing any air traffic control, so I'm not sure NATS would be particularly interested. NATS aren't the regulator anyway, the CAA are.

Re: Drone
- Ian (1st Nov 2017 - 09:19:31)

Now now Dave, some people don't like yuppies moving into the village and some don't like drones in (over) the village. Each to their own

Re: Drone
- dave (1st Nov 2017 - 11:18:26)

i do love a nerd fest.....
beats the usual 4x4 moaning and parking....
more to come no doubt ...
keyboard warriors

Re: Drone
- liz (1st Nov 2017 - 14:55:16)

Dave

I suppose attack is the best form of defence! (P.S. I don't see the CAA as keyboard warriors)

Re: Drone
- Dawn Hoskins (2nd Nov 2017 - 11:56:11)

I expect it is the same one that was over Passfield.
It must be someone local and I bet lots of other local people know exactly who it is.

Re: Drone
- Dave L (3rd Nov 2017 - 10:03:03)

Greetings from sunny Cornwall, I've moved and appears missed the resurrection of this brilliant event :( . Strange how publicity improves awareness, the drones were flying around the fireworks last year with no comment whatsoever!.

Re: Drone
- james (4th Nov 2017 - 18:45:27)

The next time i see one go over any of my land again i doubt the owners will see it again.

Re: Drone
- David Starr (5th Nov 2017 - 11:48:31)

James Do you own the air space above your property?

Perhaps you should seek fees from, or warn off, airlines, the military, air ambulance etc.

Re: Drone
- A (5th Nov 2017 - 17:42:52)

Am I the only one who really wants to see the photos/videos from the drones though?

Re: Drone
- Helen (6th Nov 2017 - 13:08:19)

I Think if it was a professsional company they would make a
charge

Re: Drone
- dave (6th Nov 2017 - 13:42:28)

The likelyhood of it ever surfacing after the slating on here is very unlikely...
Get a life moaners......
Common theme on here.... negative, moaning no life .....
The only reason you worry about a drone is of you have something to hide.... Maybe next time he flys he will have thermal imaging..... Then a few locals will be squirming.....

Re: Drone
- Jonathan (6th Nov 2017 - 15:24:33)

The reason I worry about drones is the fact that I work in the aviation industry and am an occasional recreational pilot. Not that I have anything to hide.

Here is a very good example of the misuse of drones causing thousands of pounds of chaos and disruption:

nats.aero/blog/...drone-disruption-gatwick

Here's a further visualisation of the event: vimeo.com/228662010

Yes, this is not the same as a drone being used to film the carnival in Liphook, but it should be very clear that there can be major consequences of irresponsible behaviour.

I said it before: the first time there is a fatality or major accident involving drone misuse, then the freedom that we all have to enjoy operating drones will be severely curtailed, ruining it for everyone. I don't want this to happen as although I don't own a drone at the moment they do look like fun things to have - as long as the rules are adhered to.

Re: Drone
- k (7th Nov 2017 - 09:23:39)

If it was done for profit & even if not was permission sought from the Liphook Carnival Committee - surely that would have at least been polite to ask if they could film & maybe make a donation! - Notice no comments from those who flew them - it would be nice to hear their views!

Re: Drone
- liz (7th Nov 2017 - 10:52:56)

Dave
Thermal imaging from an illegally flown drone. If you found something interesting who would you tell?!

Re: Drone
- dave (7th Nov 2017 - 12:34:53)

You dont know its illegally flown...
whats in your loft liz ?

Re: Drone
- Paul (7th Nov 2017 - 14:12:25)

I think people need to read the Permissons and Exemptions section of the CAA scheme before making any wild claims as to whether this incident was a permitted flight or not.

To help those who won't take the time to read it but would rather bang on about this being just a nosey neighbourhood of moaners, here it is just for you:

"Article 95 of the ANO states that, if you wish to fly your camera fitted drone:
- within 150m of either a congested area or an organised open air crowd or more than 1000 persons and / or
- within 50m of people or properties/objects that are not under your control
then you will need to obtain a Permission from the CAA in order to do so legally. Because the Permission will enable you to reduce the normal safety limits that have been set out for drone operations, the CAA must obviously be satisfied that you are able to do this safely".

Anyone interested can approach the CAA and ask if a permit was in place for the UAV flight over the carnival. I'll do that.

And TBH I'm not a moaner and I love the concept of drones. Just not in the hands of amateurs who break sensible aviation regulations that exist for the safety of us all and which in many cases are the development of outcomes of previous flight incidents were people have lost their lives. In other words, the rules exist for good reasons and 'ignorance is no excuse' even if you think flying a drone over a carnival is a bit of a laugh.

(I will only post again when I hear back from the CAA, and can almost predict what some people will now say).

Re: Drone
- liz (7th Nov 2017 - 15:54:57)

If it's close enough to see what's in my loft its illegally low over a built up area!

Re: Drone
- Jonathan (7th Nov 2017 - 16:36:40)

Thanks Paul - I hadn't thought of asking the CAA if there was any permission in place.

Re: Drone
- david (7th Nov 2017 - 17:53:12)

Any one ever thought it could have been the police operating the drone. I'm sure they use them for thermal image to see who's growing drugs. And keeping an eye on crowd control.

Re: Drone
- dave (7th Nov 2017 - 19:47:41)

no one really cares ... dont you think the caa have better stuff to concentrate on rather than someone who has no life and gets excited about quoting airspace regulations etc....
get a life ....
muppets ....
complete and utter ....
maybe you should all meet in the millennium hall for a reach around.

Re: Drone
- Bob (7th Nov 2017 - 20:40:30)

Dave part of me thinks you are closer to this drone than you are letting on ugm!!!! Maybe you are defending this with too much vigour!! Just saying

Re: Drone
- Ian (7th Nov 2017 - 20:54:07)

Dave, people do obviously care hence the post and considering the number of contributions you have made you do as well. Everyone knows your point of view now so why do you keep bleating on like a complete anorak

Re: Drone
- James Desmond (7th Nov 2017 - 23:39:52)

I own a drone and currently have a £5million public liability certificate in case of any unforeseen circumstances. I regularly fly my drone and was contacted on several occasions during and after this carnival. I would like to categorically state that it was not me flying and if it was I would quite likely own up to it and share the footage. I fly for a hobby and have NO interest in looking into people’s windows at night or flying over their land to see what they are up to!!! I think there are a few that give us pilots a very bad name. And there are a lot that just don’t like it and would like them all banned!!!
