Electric Vehicle Charging installation
- Jonathan (29th Oct 2017 - 10:54:33)
Has anyone in the village had an electric charging point installed? I'm particularly interested in hearing about any local firms who can install with the OLEV/EVHS ( #electric-vehicle-homecharge-scheme ) grant that is available to owners at the moment.
Thanks.

Hi
Yes, I’ve had 2 EV points installed by Andy of Earthelectric both using OLEV grants at 2 locations.

Would highly recommend him

Thanks Alan, what type of charging units have you had fitted?
I'm not sure how easy it's going to be - our meter box is on the front wall, but the consumer unit is on the opposite side of the house (and front door) to the driveway and garage!

I went for the tethered Rolec unit to charge my Tesla.
I would suspect Andy would add a new consumer unit just for the car next to your meter. Then run to the charger.
At my sons house the consumer unit was right in the middle. Andy managed to get the cable under the lounge floor and out to the charger location. Not much could phase him ! (Pun not intended).

Ours was installed for free by British Gas. It is tethered but I wired in a new cable when we changed our car.

A few years ago the government OLEV grant fully paid for the installation.
It now covers a percentage of the cost, so that an untethered install costs £149 and a tethered one (with charging cable attached) costs £199 inc VAT. I believe.

If anyone is thinking of ordering a Tesla Model S or X before the 31st October there is a £750 discount and free supercharging for life of car using this referral link
dg.uk/tesla
The cars are expensive, but servicing and ‘fuel’ costs are much lower than any comparable vehicle.
It is not for everbody, but once you’ve driven one it is hard to go back to a internal combustion engine.

Don't forget you don't need a charger installed. You can get 10 amps out of a normal mains plug so depending on your usage overnight charging on a plug may be fine. The range added will depend on you car. £149 buys many miles worth of electricity. Our last car was a plugin hybrid so we did not really need a charger a mains plug would have been fine.

Yes, I am getting a Plug-in Hybrid so will see how I go with the 3-pin plug to start with. The manufacturer of the car says that this option is really for emergency use only though and the supply to my garage where I will plug it in is only a spur from my downstairs ring main which is annoying. So it would be interesting to see the cost of a dedicated charging unit.

With the small battery in hybrids the 10 amp charge from a 13A socket is more than adequate, but might be less convenient than a dedicated charger which can give up to 32 amps if the car can take it.
10 amps will give around 7 miles of addded range per hour.
32 amps will add around 24 miles of range per hour to a Tesla.
