Laptop problem

I'm getting on somewhat and technology - particularly with my laptop - get's the better of my poor old brain. I can manage what might be regarded as the basics but suddenly I'm being blocked regularly with a notice that screams SCRIPT ERROR and stops me from moving to anywhere else.
Would some nice person explain to me, in understandable terms if possible, what causes the problem and is there an easy way round it? I do shut down the laptop overnight.
