Police Speed Check
- Deadly (19th Nov 2010 - 12:06:30)

How nice it was to have the Police sitting along Haslemere Road on Saturday, with a speed camera. It's about time as I know many residents who struggle to get out of their drives without someone bearing down on them at 50mph, especially at the top end having come from Haslemere direction.

I see someone went so far as to paint a sheet "Speed Camera" and attach it to a hedge at the Maltings junction. Whilst this annoyed me at first, in the fact that people were being prewarned, I wondered whether this was a very good makeshift deterrent and should it just be left there ad infinitum!!

Any chance any Hampshire Police read this - can you repeat this process during the week especially between 7.30 and 9.00am as kids crossing the road take their life in their hands at that time of day.

We should adopt the system I have seen used in Portugal.

Speed sensors are placed at the entry to a village and if anyone entering breaks the limit a set of traffic lights 400 yards further on turns red and all the traffic is stopped for 30 seconds. As a result they do not have a speeding problem

Once it is put in there is no need for speed cameras or police at the side of the road with speed detectors. A simple but effective solution!

Until people start driving through red lights. Great solution!

It would be good to see some sort of speed control on the Longmoor Rd. Two cats were hit last week with one killed outright and the other badly injured. Cars come off the bypass and do not slow down even as they go into the bend. There have been a number of car crashes as well as animals injured over the last few years. Suggestions as to how to prevent these would be welcome.

The Longmoor Road should be 40mph for its whole length from Liphook where it initially changes to 40mph to the A3. End of story.

It doesn't matter what the speed limit is, as the Portsmouth Road is 30mph but I don't often witness that. I can pull out of my driveway and there is nothing in sight from the Petersfield direction and then within seconds there is somebody right behind me! People are going even faster now to get round parked cars before the car coming the other way gets too close. We also have overtaking. Everyone is in too much of a hurry everyone has forgotten the highway code such as give way if the obstruction is on your side of the road, or if the car is coming up hill. And with regards to saying thank you if you do give way well thats just a joke these days.
While I am ranting maybe we could remind drivers around all roundabouts in Liphook that you give way to the right and that you need to signal to give the other traffic a clue as to where you are going, and I am not just talking about the two in the centre of the village, the Sainsbury's roundabout is just as bad.

well said tina!

Indeed Tina, i thought most people's indicators in Liphook were broken when it came to the roundabouts.

Having to guess which way people are going means my crystal ball has started to fail me due to overuse!

If you come from Liphook past Bohunt and just before the Deers Hut juction you go past a de-restriction sign on the way to the A3, therefore when you turn into Longmoor Road or Bircholt, Pines, Hasledene, you can travel at break neck speed, we ought to have a speed restriction of 30mph when you get past the Deers Hut turn. The Deers hut junction on to Longmoor Road has seen many bad accidents over the years I have lived in the area for 28 years and there has been several fatals there. I think we all ought to slow down a little.

while we are talking about the roundabouts in liphook, can anyone tell me where in the highway code it says you can block the whole roundabout? even the police due this!!!! it's frustrating when you want to get over & someone is sitting ignoring you because they know they should of waited instead of pushing in:(

Re: Police Speed Check
- Les Knight (26th Nov 2010 - 17:49:26)

The 30mph limit should extend all the way from Bohunt school to the bypass junction. Those of us who live on or have access off the Longmoor road witness excessive speed all day every day but it seems to us that the powers that be think Liphook ends at the junction with the Avenue.

LOVE chris' idea of the traffic lights....!!! i did notice a big difference on the headly road when the speed limit was lowered coming into passfield. however, this little lull in the speed of traffic seems to have stopped and everyone is back up to breakneck speed...

4x nasty cars decided they didnt have to stop at the pelican crossing for me and 4 children to cross.... how nice of them to zoom past at 35+mph... how can we expect to instil a good sense of highway code in our kids if the adults decide it doesnt apply to them and flaunt it!!!
