Competition Time - New roundabout on Longmoor Road
- JeffB (15th Sep 2017 - 13:30:06)
A new competition on the eagerly awaited new roundabout on Longmoor Road!!
What will happen first?
1) The signpost on the island gets wiped out
2) The roundabout gets run over by a HGV trying to head into the village
3) An accident occurs because you cant see it well enough from either direction
Extra prizes if you can guess how many days (minutes) before the correct answer happens.
Prizes to be given by the County/ Parish Councillors who gave permission for the development to happen even after local objections.
If they are back from their well deserved, probably paid for holidays.

Totally agree a bizarre place for a new development. As though we need more cars on the Longmoor road clogging up Liphook. The council seem hell bent on putting up houses in the wrong place. As for the roundabout it speaks for its self.

I will say December when it's ice, and the water mains have burst again :-). as the camber on the roundabout is going to get the HGV lorries as well. :-(.

Jeff
We live right next to the new roundabout and whilst we agree with your points our main concern is that it makes our access completely blind which means that we will be at real risk of an accident every time we pull out onto Longmoor Rd.
However, if you really want to allocate blame it should be pointed out that permission was granted by East Hants District Council on the advice of Hampshire County Council's highways department. The Parish Council objected but both their and our own objections were not considered compelling!
I am still trying to get something done before it opens but am not holding my breath...

There is going to be quite a lot of affordable housing and key working housing on this site which will enable quite a few local people to get their own roof over their heads, so probably not as unwanted as you would think.

There are three tiers of council - parish, district and county.
Parish councillors are voluntary and do not receive any pay. Your parish council objected to the development.
District councillors do receive an allowance.
East Hampshire DISTRICT Council is the planning authority and designated the site for 175 houses.
EH DISTRICT Council planning committee approved the application.
County councillors also receive an allowance.
Highways approved the roundabout layout, NOT the parish council.

New houses have to be built so it is inevitable they will be in the areas that someone thinks is the "wrong place". The roundabout is not the ideal solution to the extra traffic there but was insisted upon by Hampshire Highways, it is the standard thing they do in new developments, wherever the development is.

It is worth remembering that the junction off the roundabout on Longmoor Road is the ONLY access into and out of the proposed development of some 350+ dwellings. So an estimated 500 plus vehicles twice a day, plus delivery vans (Yodel, DHL etc) plus service vehicle (refuse etc)
If I were a betting man, my money would be on a vehicle travelling north along the straight from the A3 having built up a decent head of steam, rounding the right hander after the bridge straight into a roundabout!

Affordable housing in liphook nothing is affordable here ! You watch they be in the price range of 400 up actually more maybe 450 That's not affordable for some . And also I noticed that the houses that are all crammed together in the new development in liphook the prices there are crazy too it isn't affordable housing unless you can afford it .
Living in the south is way to expensive and do not tell me to move up north lol when my husband and I need to stay here for work purposes !
And the schemes of help to buy etc they no good to some either as they just don't work out they say all these schemes are good etc but in the end cost more money the government get there money back in the end and then another scheme you only own so much of the house
Luckily my husband and I could afford to live in liphook but what about the other families or young people how they going to afford a place around here where nothing is under 300 k anymore and those new houses certainly are not going to be proved from 250-300 up maybe 370 if lucky but for some it's too expensive
And it's ridiculous putting a roundabout there that road is already a dangerous road went down there today was shocked to see what's it going to achieve people cannot use the roundabouts in the village so yes it's going to cause us more congestion I think

I thoroughly enjoyed reading JeffB's humorous original entry and can't disagree with his probable prognosis for problems/accidents.
What a shame that it immediately becomes sour faced and serious with people intent on educating him about the different councils and commenting on the need for housing. Society has become so ridiculously PC, touchy and over sensitive killing all sense of fun and wit.

If you're obeying the speed limit of 30mph you should have plenty of time to (controversial now) READ ROAD SIGNS, SLOW DOWN, OBSERVE THE HIGHWAY CODE, DRIVE RESPONSIBLY.
TRY IT!

Just for a laugh, I would post what Taylor Wimpey have said they are going to do for the community.
We will make significant financial contributions towards improving local infrastructure and community facilities. Contributions will be made to East Hampshire Council in accordance with local requirements for:
Community Project Worker
Education
Environmental Improvements
Green Travel Plan Approval
Green Travel Plan Monitoring
Open Space
Primary Care Trust
Transport
They don't say about clogging up the already busy roads, how the village can't cope with the extra traffic, let alone the drains.
It is just the fat cats get richer, sod the community

Plenty of time still to enter!
Lots of entries but not many actual guesses.
I am afraid to say many that so far do not qualify as they haven't actual put a guess!
Remember to add GUESS 1, GUESS 2 or GUESS 3 or GUESS OTHER and stating your idea of what will happen.
Added points for time scale.
Entries close within hours of the roundabout opening (I am sure)
Thanks for all those have made the time to enter and educate us on councils and affordable housing.
Not forgetting how Liphook will cope with the added traffic, the schools that are already full, blah, blah , blah.
Looking forward to receiving more entries and announcing a winner very soon.
(If the opening is not delayed any further. Waiting for the sharpie to come out on the signs again ;-) Extra extra bonuses points for that. How many weeks until the grand opening?)
Good luck Steve with the campaign to get things changed.
I am sure it includes the LED lighting that doesn't actually light the danger area well enough.

- Paul (16th Sep 2017 - 17:09:01)
@Jeff - fully agree, and I'll take a guess in the spirit of the request!
Guess 1: A Saturday night, around 1130pm, car travelling south and I'll go with Saturday 22nd September.
Guess 2: any model black 4x4 on a school run heading north, lets say a Tuesday, around 0840, within 2 weeks from now
Guess 3: Me, tonight, heading north. TBH I don't know how I haven't already clipped it .... )

- Robin (18th Sep 2017 - 12:22:01)
My guess:
1
Hgv going over the roundabout and taking the signs down within one week.
2
4x4 crashing into signs on approach.

The blame lies with the government and the increasing number of houses need to accommodate the massive population in this country. So basically supply and demand. Infrastructure and quality of life does not even come into the equation.
So basically we will all have to suffer poorer quality of life so others will be improved.

I love this thread! (although don't blame the Parish Councillors who fought tooth and nail against it)
My guess is......3) An accident will occur because you cant see it properly from either direction.
My prediction is that this will happen on the first day that there is ice on the road and people are unable to stop quickly as it springs up in front of them as a surprise fixture!.

It amazes me how a roundabout can be built on what is essentially flat ground, yet have such an odd angle to it.
It looks like a soufflé gone wrong and I now refer to it as “soufflé roundabout”.

Re: Competition Time - New roundabout on Longmoor Road
- Matt (3rd Oct 2017 - 22:16:15)
Great thread :
GUESS 1: Saturday mid December 2027 at precisely 23:43 going south straight into centre roundabout from car leaving Hungry Horse
GUESS 2: Saturday mid December 2027 at precisely 23:44 going north from drunk on way back from Deers Hut hitting GUESS 1.
Please note the year 2027 is an approximation of the completion of said roundabout, they may need longer to finish it

Pinch points have been put in now, coming from the deers hut towards the roundabout - 'traffic has priority' !!!!
