Angel Investors locally..?
- LocalLady (23rd Aug 2017 - 11:25:08)
Hi everyone
I have been looking for an Angel Investor (as opposed to a VC) who would be interested in investing, and being actively involved, in my start up business.
So wondered if anyone knew of any set ups locally to enable this as, looking online, it's all more national and international. It would be preferable to me to have a local investor.
So if anyone knows of any groups / local websites / companies, I would be most grateful.
Any ideas anyone?
All help gratefully received
X

Might I suggest, having seen similar questions asked a thousand times as part of the London Start-Up community, what exactly does your business/Start-Up do. I.e. What is the product/service you offer or want to offer?

h - no, not banks, as just money is not the answer for me, an AI can offer advice and help too, which is what I need most.
And no, don't want to put it up here - all I asked was did anyone know of any local groups or associations. Didn't want to discuss my actual business on here.
Came here for positive advice, not rudeness

I wasn't seeking to be rude, I was only suggesting that to best recommend an angel investor it might be ideal to know the industry in which the business is in.
Many angel investors aren't necessarily actively looking for a business but are rather inspired by a startup and as such choose to get involved and invest.

Yes LocalLady, of course you're looking for positive comments, but if you don't say what you're business is about, how would a rich sugar daddy sitting at home know if it's of interest? An angel investor will only usually get involved in something they know or enjoy.
Whilst I'd have guessed most of the big start up investors (apart from banks as already suggested) are based in the city (or is it Mayfair nowadays?), there are almost certainly some rich retired investors/entrepreuners round Liphook with both money and time on their hands, sadly I'm not one of them, but good luck!

I don’t think LocalDeveloper was being rude. If you post on a public website asking for advice I think you should be prepared to provide some details and be a little more transparent. You posted that you had looked on the web but found Angel Investors too international and national and that you are looking for someone locally based. I searched for Angel Investors Hampshire and came up with:
"George Dibben, co-owner of the Winchester-based serviced office providers Hampshire workspace and chair of the business investment network Angels 5k gives some insights into the process of investing in businesses."
Try visiting the site and perhaps it might be worth contacting them for further information.

Hi local lady,
I know that there were a group of Guildford angel investors who used to blog....you might find them with a google search
I think you are wise to keep your cards close to your chest at this point, someone could easily steal your idea. Take no notice of the over excitable on here :)

Actually, again as a similar question about non-disclosure agreements and not discussing ideas you're working on, playing your cards close to the chest whilst seemingly savvy often results in poor idea validation.
Even in fairly public spaces such as this forum, the likelihood of a niche idea being stolen by someone is quite slim and whilst there is anecdotal evidence that some ideas do get stolen. The majority don't. Mostly because the best ideas are the ones no one's had before and most of those ideas are rejected as so absurd as to no merit executing.
What I'm trying to say is, it may seem like the smart idea to keep the idea secret but in doing so you lose out on valuable insight into the product or service you wish to offer which is often far more valuable and therefore worth the risk of discussing it

yes it would be a good idea to even have a clue given, such as a "new invention" or even a "selling website " or new app?
after all an angel investment club will ask those questions, and it could be just as risky telling one person face to face your business, as it could be that one person who is going to steal your original idea!

I think maybe I didn’t explain myself well – I didn’t post here looking for investment, I was asking if people may know of groups/companies or associations, who may invest, that I could approach.
There would no problem discussing the idea and, of course, I would expect to have to reveal details with any potential investors. I do agree with LocalDeveloper actually, that it is rare for anyone to steal ideas and, in fact, others only really get interested in copying once you start turning over around k500 a year – and I am a long way from that!
So, no, I’m not secretive about the idea, but this is not the correct place to pitch.
Had a quick look this morning at Angles 5k and they look good Penny, so thank you for that. I will take some time next week to look further.
Searched for the Guildford one and came up with something worth pursuing, there, too, so thanks Claire.
