Chapel Common electric fence
- Mathieu L'Ennui (8th Aug 2017 - 22:24:09)

I normally park by the cricket club car park and walk my dog at the Liphook end of the common. I hadn't been to the Rake end for a while, but was there today and disappointed to see that half the big meadow area had been cordoned off by an electric fence.

Does anyone know why and how long it will be there?

Thanks

This is common land and therefore commoners can graze their sheep or cattle there. They tend to use electric fences when introducing young stock on to the land to avoid them straying until they can be trusted. I have seem them do this many times over the years.

I met a guy from the National Trust a couple of weeks ago and he said that the cows would be there for the rest if the summer but that the electric fence would be removed before that. Apparently the cows are usually free ranging when they're there but this lot had to be fenced in as they were a bit unruly to start with but have now settled down.

Chapel Common is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest to support a range of rare species, rather than dog walking. Grazing is necessary to maintain this special habitat and is part of management plan agreed with Natural England. Without grazing then this lowland heath would be lost to trees and bracken, along with all the species that require it, lizard, nightjars, woodlark etc. The alternative is to use mechanical means which is noisy, consumes carbon and polluting. Long may the cows keep doing their sterling work.
