Village War Memorial
- Andrew Lucas (1st Nov 2010 - 17:39:25)

Hello. I am researching the brave men named on our village war memorial in Bramshott churchyard. Does anyone know anyone named on it. This is our own one not the Canadian one. Cheers.

Hi i came across a post from you saying you were interested in SR Crabtree who captained Zaida*. I am interested in him because I was given by my sister for Christmas an old red metal box with Lord Rosebery's initials and Zaida RYS on the top - found in a Suffolk charity shop.

From the same shop and close to the box was purchased a coronation mug from 1902 with the name George Crabtree on it. My sister looked on the net to findout about the box and discovered to her surprise that an SR Crabtree had commanded the Zaida. Having made this unlikely connection she put the two things together and gave me both.

I was trying to discover if SR had a son called George who was around in 1902. It is a china mug with his name nicely painted under the glaze so presumably was specially made and not cheap. I wonder if it was pure chance or if they are connected somehow.

I understand SR Crabtree features on your village memorial although buried in Iraq. I'd be interested in anything you have found out.
Many thanks
Liz

* H.M.S. Yacht Zaida. In a book on the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, it mentions that Zaida was owned by The Earl of Rosebery. The Navy List for July 1916, showed that SR Crabtree Commander of Zaida was retired, and joined the Zaida in June 1916, Zaida (from the Royal Yacht Squadron book) is mentioned as being tender to HMS Hannibal, East Indies and Egypt Station sunk 17/8/1916 owned by The Earl of Rosebery.

Hi Liz
Thanks for the message. I'm not sure how the talk back system works but if the editor wants to pass on my email address that's fine.

Ps a note for the editor. Thanks for the info on the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Email and mobile number passed to Liz for you
