Carnival
- Chris (31st Oct 2010 - 07:45:41)
Well Done Karen and Carnival Team, another well organised local event. I hobbled round with my lovely partner to share this years carnival turnout with my friend Elaine and her lovely family. The floats as usual were a joy to see and the weather was also very kind to us. We enjoyed the fireworks from the comfort of home, however, as my crutches were taking their toll on my hands. Thanks Liphook - I love this little village and its community spirit. Chris x

Ditto Chris's comments. Well done to Karen and all the other Carnival committee members, not forgetting the marshalls and all the people who obviously put so much time and thought and effort into creating those wonderful floats. Another great carnival. Well done all.

Well done everybody for organising the carnival. I was just a wee bit disappointed in the lack of floats this year ,compared to previous years, is it because of `elf and saftey ?

Thank you to all the carnival commitee and all the helpers for a super evening and also the afternoon events for the children. We appreciate all the hard work that goes into making it a success.
I must say that after the clearing up on Sunday morning the village now looks a lot tidier than before the carnival.

If ever you wanted your faith restored in Liphook as a vibrant community then you could do a lot worse than forego your extra hour in bed and take a walk through the village on the morning after the Carnival.
As someone who has been loosely connected with the Carnival Committee for a number of years it never fails to move me when I see committee members and others who care for Liphook filling binbags full of rubbish left by revellers the night before.
As someone has already said on this thread, the streets look better today than they normally are as a result of this gallant band. One further observation I would make is with regard to the plastic beer glasses that are used by both pubs on Carnival night. When trodden on they splinter into myriad pieces and they can only be picked up with a dustpan and brush.
Now we all know why these plastic pint pots are used by alfresco drinkers so would'nt it be nice if, as a gesture of goodwill, one or other of the licensed premises came out with a tray of hot drinks if only to acknowledge the extra work that their customers create.

Wow, i must say that the standard of the floats this year was excellent...
I feel that the even though the total amount of floats has sadly gone down but the quality is excellent. :-) Yet again I saw the likely lads float go though the village.. did they make some noise :-) I also thought the BCL Technical float sounded lould..
I feel it would be nice next year for some more floats, local business etc mybe Cornhill, the army could put a small display on, a float from the best kids fancy dress, and maybe a few a porta loo's for people taking part in the floats, and a small burger van down longmoor road in the layby area, this would allow people to have something to eat and also be very profitable.

Put that half stone back on this afternoon Jill. Not eating much yesterday and all that exercise made me completely starving and I have done nothing but eat and sleep today (well apart from our rubbish collecting!)
My thanks to you all on the committee. You all work so hard on Carnival day and throughout the year! What a team we are!

Morning Andy
Thank you for your comments. Just to set you straight, the toilets at Bohunt are available for all those taking part, we also have a cafe open (run by WI) for helpers, participants and the bands etc. I think you will find however, that most of the adults on floats are not particularly interested in eating anything once they get to the Longmoor Road, their refreshments come in liquid format. Most children who are taking part arrive nearer to the time that we set off and are not allowed to eat as they are in costumes.
A burger van in Longmoor Road would be not be profitable for us, only those that run the fun fair as they operate the food vans around the square, although they do make a contribution to the Carnival Committee.
I think the floats that we had were superb. I think we were lucky to have that many, with the financial difficulties that we are all facing today and certainly the forseeable future, to still have groups of people and businesses in the village who want to spend that much money, time and effort to support a community event such as our Carnival is absolutely fantastic. So let's be positive and thank those that were there on the night and not dwell on who wasn't.
Regards
Karen Feeney

Thank you Karen and the Carnival Committee for once again a wonderful Carnival, we very much enjoyed our last Celebration of 100 years of Guiding (Nationally the finale to the Centenary year was last week, but for Liphook it was the Carnival!)
For us its not just the day and the evening, we spend weeks before with the girls painting and preparing for the float, which means that those not on the float on the night can also be involved.
The Carnival means a lot to us and especially this year as we also celebrated 100 years since our 1st Liphook Carnival!
Thanks once again
