Avenue close parking at school.
- Jane (14th Jul 2017 - 15:30:22)
Looks like the residents have a strategy now by parking their own vehicles on the left hand side of Avenue Close as you exit rather than the more commonly used right hand side. Both the Brown VW van and green fiesta (residents cars) have started taking these never before used parking spaces consistantly for the last two weeks, which effectively reduces the total legitimate spaces by about 4 as no can park on the right hand side which has more spots. This tactic thus keeps their own homes on the right completely clear.
Clever, but selfish and petty, as it's not only reducing total capacity but given entering and exiting is now no longer a single side, all drivers are having to weave from left to right and back again as they drive down Avenue close it's now more unsafe than it ever was.
I doubt it will be long before those cars get damaged or someone gets hurt

They are workmen, not residents, and they have as much right to park there as anyone else.

Parking has been an issue here for so long...I can scarcely blame the residents for trying soemthing different to change he traffic patterns. Yes they are probably being driven by a base emotion, but since no one seems to be prepared to address the parking issues permanently then these sort of things keep on happening.
Perhaps the School Governors should look to address the parking issues, and balance the needs of parents with those who live there.
Here is a starter. Asda NOT to deliver, to the school, during the pick up time, and don't jam up the road by driving into a non-existent gap. I witnessed this!
Get the children out on time so parents can pick up their kids and go. if the infants school is out on time, there will be more space when the Juniors leave a few minutes later. And when I say on time I mean on time, not 5-10 minutes later.
Is there a reasoable place within 5 minutes of the school where a park and stride could operate and the school could take "possession" of the children from?
No doubt there are other ideas too...!

Jane,
For your (ill-informed) info, the van and car DO NOT BELONG TO RESIDENTS, they belong to builders who are currently working on a property in The Avenue. As a resident, I find their parking just as annoying as you and as a resident, (and unlike you) it doesn't just impact me and other residents for a few minutes a day, but throughout the day that they are parked there.
However, if a resident did decide to park there, then they would be within their rights to do so, as would you - there are no yellow lines stopping anyone from doing so.
What I call petty is someone making assumptions, demanding and expecting special treatment so that they can drop their little ones off just seconds away from the school and then thinking that they have a right to complain if someone else wants to park on the same public road.
Selfish (and petty) if you ask me.

This thread makes me happy my kids are going to Hollycombe even if it means I have to drive rather than walk them!
Couldn't the PTA & residents come together to find a solution?
How about walking buses from various points in the village to disperse the school traffic?

- MT (14th Jul 2017 - 18:42:03)
Oh my goodness Richard! Let's blame the school...again! The school campus has been in Avenue Close for many, many years. The traffic problem has increased over the years as society has changed. Parents are not always in a position to stay at home for their children and need to get off to and return from work promptly. As for delivery vehicles, I very much doubt that the school can specify when deliveries can be made (I'm sure we'd all like to be able to do that!) The school can also not tell parents where to park, though I know from my experience of having children there that they have spent years trying to encourage parents to park and walk. There was also once a trial of a walking bus but, surprise, surprise there were few adults willing to manage this and not enough parents wishing to let their child walk in a large group. As for letting children out of the Infants on time so that cars leave before the Juniors, how ridiculous, believe it or not most families have children in both schools! Would you like them to drive away and return five minutes later?!! Our schools are there to educate our children not to solve parking problems and road rage! If you don't wish to be bothered by peak time traffic, don't live near a school/hospital/shop!

Just to confirm, MT, this thread was not started by a resident, but a parent. A parent who got their 'facts' wrong.....

MT,
I think you will find that the houses in Avenue Close were built before the school was.
I have a friend who lives in Avenue Close and I think you are out of order telling people not live near any school.
Today people including myself tend to use cars to much.
When my two daughters went to school my wife took them both ways in all weather on foot.
Perhaps parents should start walking a little more
Just thought I would poke my nose in.

If your friend has lived near the school for the 45 odd years that it has been there then I sincerely hope that they have not spent the last 20 of them complaining about the car parking rather than considering a move!! My point really was to object to the school being blamed for inconsiderate adults and being expected to find some sort of miraculous solution! The only solution is for people to walk further but this would only make the problem move to somebody else's road/driveway. Maybe you can come up with the solution yourself?

Not sure than Jane specified whether she was a resident or not???! Either way, I was merely trying to point out that the school is not to blame for inconsiderate driving.

Jane, the more I think about it, the more upset I am getting. You have falsely accused people (in a public forum) of something they have categorically not done, stirring up division in the process, and yet have not had the decency to apologise...

It comes up again if you don't like it move!! Why should people move just because of other peoples inconsiderate parking when maybe, just maybe they have lived there for a number of years and on the whole happy living where they are, where perhaps they have many friends and family around them and perhaps convenient to where they work. Just saying!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with L. Jane has made incorrect allegations publicly and should apologise publicly. Next time she should be sure of her facts. The residents have enough to put up with without having false allegations directed at them. To cap if all she actually uses the word “selfish”. Pot and kettle come to mind when I see some of the parking in The Avenue at school times.
MT, Richard was not blaming the school per se, he was just making some sensible suggestions so instead of criticising him, why don’t you suggest something yourself, other than the negative and unhelpful one which has already appeared on this Thread and previous Threads on the same subject ie that people should move if they don’t like inconsiderate parking which is what that statement amounts to – and who said anything about “road rage”. This Thread as L pointed out was started by a parent (which is obvious if you read her post) not a resident so where does “road rage” come into. Perhaps you mean the parents having “road rage”.
Here is a suggestion – why don’t parents do more shared runs. Some may already do this, but all too often you see cars, sometimes large ones, with just one child in it and please don’t give me the usual “well parents work and are on a tight schedule” mantra. I worked when my children went to school and I had no difficulty in doing a shared run – saves petrol and time and the kids can chat.

There is a solution as proposed some time ago, create an in and out by the sports field entrance. There is room even though they have built the tennis court. It does mean money, but our councils have plenty.

- MT (15th Jul 2017 - 14:47:07)
Penny, I did indeed mean the parents having 'road rage' and I totally agree that it would be a great idea for parents to walk and not drive to alleviate the problem, though it is a fact that many of them need to get straight off to work and need their car. Just for the record, I am one of those people who live near the schools and put up with the inconsiderate parking and unpleasantness of drivers! I chose to live here and choose not to move, the problems only exist for a short period twice a day and I work around this whenever I can, but I also do not expect schools to solve the problems caused by lazy, inconsiderate parents or deal with residents who endlessly complain about a situation which is only going to get worse!

- Jan J (15th Jul 2017 - 17:50:39)
This is an ongoing problem, my son attended these schools, and he is now in his early forties.
It was suggested that Avenue Close was made residents parking only, and that a drop off bay was made just down in the Avenue, but nothing ever come of it, maybe this idea could be considered again.
