Aeroplanes .
- carol (5th Jul 2017 - 06:57:52)

Over last few days I've noticed distant noise of jets flying over at regular intervals & appear to be several rather than just one at a time . I heard them as early as 6am today . Over w/end I put it down to Festival of Speed but that's finished now , hasn't it ? Can anyone throw a light on this as very curious .

Farnborough Air Show is on 14th - 16th July. We had the Red Arrows fly over the other day.

There was information about this last year at the end of October. See the post which began ( I think ) TAG Farnborough consultation....

Yes, this is Farnborough, now a commercial airfield. Despite all the petitions against TAG it still went ahead. They have to fly lower to miss the main flightpaths for Gatwick and Heathrow.

The Red Arrows were parked up at Farnborough Airport whilst the Festival of Speed was on at Goodwood.

Sitting in the garden yesterday I noticed a lot more passenger jets flying low altitude, I thought it was unusual for round here, hope it's not going to become the norm, it's becoming more like London.

I read that with all the delays at check in at main airports, they are predicting a big upturn in private flights from regional airports, you can fly to Europe from about £1000 on a private chartered jet, to a lot of people that's very affordable, Farnham and others are gearing up for it to really take off! (sorry had to get that in)

Nothing has changed (yet) with Farnborough and their airspace consultation. Above Liphook the base of Controlled Airspace is 4500 ft, stepping down to 3500 ft just to the East towards Haslemere. Business jets for Farnborough have to (currently) leave controlled airspace as the airport does not have any airspace of it's own other than the standard "Aerodrome Traffic Zone".

Outside controlled airspace (i.e. below 4500 ft over Liphook) it is a free for all users (light aircraft, helicopters, microlights etc.) as long as they can land clear of a built up area in the event of an engine failure and do not fly closer than 500 ft to any person, vessel, vehicle or structure (with some exemptions). Farnborough traffic will descend below the base of controlled airspace at some point depending on how busy the airspace above is - this airspace is where you are protected by Air Traffic Control when you fly on commercial flights from Gatwick, Heathrow etc.

The fact is the skies are much much busier with much more traffic. It could be that this forces the Farnborough traffic to leave controlled airspace earlier and hence lower. While I'm not in favour of Farnborough's proposals, you probably wouldn't notice much difference as their traffic would just be at the same altitude but now inside controlled airspace. It could push other aviation users (such as the light aircraft and helicopters) lower though to avoid the airspace.

Other traffic within controlled airspace may be lower than normal due to the increased volume of traffic too - with controllers having to maintain either 1000 ft separation vertically or (in our area at least) 3 nautical miles laterally between aircraft at the same level, space is at somewhat of a premium at busy times so departing aircraft sometimes get stuck at lower levels before they have the space to climb away further.

www.flightradar24.com can give you information on many aircraft - particularly larger ones and you may be able to work out what is going on. It has a history function so you can look back a few days.
