Car reg AF13 at pedestrian crossing
- Sarah (7th Jun 2017 - 09:28:14)

Luckily my 9 year old has the good sense to stop and wait at the pedestrian crossing at Headley Road which,by the way is what you are supposed to do when driving. Please slow down and pay attention before you kill someone.

I am sorry to say that in the last couple of months I have seen two other vehicles drive straight over this crossing while there were children using it.

It was during the morning school run which is a busy time of day where extra care needs to be taken.

Last week I saw a chap drive straight over the crossing near The Anchor while in use.

Its an accident waiting to happen. Both might be best replaced with Pelican Crossings.

We've also had a near miss when a lady driver (Land rover) went through a red light on the Portsmouth Road so they don't stop even for lights. However, it is an upgrade to a zebra crossings. Does there needs to be an accident before something gets done to improve the safety of roads for cars & pedestrians?

How about a proactive approach rather than a reactive one from the local council/highways agency? Anyone have experience of setting up a petition?

Don't you think that sometimes people just walk straight out onto crossing instead of just holding back for a bit longer till the car driver actually sees you b4 going straight onto crossing. It is not always the car drivers fault.Yes it can be ,,b4 you all get down on the driver ,after all there are 3 recognised crossing in 150 yards and have seen people just walk out.

I really do think the zebra crossing opposite the Hungry Horse is too close to the mini roundabout!

Whilst I agree the speeding etc round Liphook in General is appalling - & agree special care needs to be taken especially at school times - the High way Code states that cars give way to Pedestrians when they are ACTUALLY ON THE CROSSING

ref pedestrians zebra crossings :
Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. ..

Highway code for Motorists 195
Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing. A zebra crossing with a central island is two separate crossings
Law ZPPPCRGD reg 25

I agree more consideration needs to be given by many drivers - but pedestrians too often launch themselves in to the road when very close to crossings adults & children because they can't be bothered to walk a few extra feet (I was a witness to this only last week middle aged couple by the pelican crossing - lights green for me - just walked across road not 5 feet from crossing) or because they are not paying attention as on mobile phones or playing I pods not aware of what is around them

NOT saying this was the case in the start of this thread clearly it wasn't & yes the driver should have been slowing down ready in case they needed to stop.

Hope that is of help & gives some clarity
