- Dee (8th May 2017 - 11:29:45)
Does anyone have any recommendations of local Nursing or Residential care homes for elderly, dementia sufferers?

Greenbanks Nursing Home on London Road - ( I believe it has changed owners recently though ) Was good - I used to work there ( but a long time ago )
Also Forest Brow, Forest Road, Liss
Depending on your budget Huntingdon House at Grayshott is excellent & have separate Buildings for Dementia & Nursing Care requirements.
Sending my best wishes- Make sure you find the right home for the person - everyone is different & require & like different things - don't hesitate to visit ( perhaps more than once if you have the chance & at different times of the day )
Good luck with your search if you can take your time rather than rushing - but i do appreciate that's not always possible - Look at CQC feedback to- online if you can

I can highly recommend East Hill House in Liss, which is a care home rather than a nursing home. An elderly relative lives there who has significant memory loss but is otherwise in good health. the staff are very caring and kind.
Do go and visit all the local homes before making a decision and also read their CQC reports.

wenhamholt.uk this should take you to their website.
My father in law stayed there for the last 3 weeks of his life. My mother in law stayed with him 24 /7. So she saw everything that went on and could not believe how wonderful the care was.
They gave my mother in law all the meals and really looked after her as well. The care my mother in law saw was amazing could not fault it at all. Even the owner was hands on.
I'm 100% sure you will be more than happy with everything at the home. Father In law was not eating very much and mother in law joking said he likes kippers and they straight away said we will go and buy some for him. She declined because he was to sick to eat anything more than ice cream .
Nothing was to much trouble for them. If you would like to talk to my mother in law if you email me robinmlock@yahoo.com I will email you her number and you can find out first hand how wonderful the place is.

Such a difficult decision for you.
The only way is to visit the local services at different times of the day and get a feel for them.
Ask what there core staffing is (ratio of staff on the floor to number of people in the house)
Ask if this is a ' home for life' , e.g., do they support people right to the end of their life, it can be distressing if a persons well being deteriorates and the home want to hospitalise them.
Ask about activity programmes, how they intend to engage your family member or friend in their local and wider community.
Ask how they keep families updated on their loved ones well being, do they send email, photos of activities etc.
Ask how they support staff to maintain the dignity of your loved one.
Ask about use of agency staff, is there a high percentage? When you visit, ask staff you meet how long they have worked there ( good staff retention can be an indicator of a settled , well led home).
You can also ask what percentage of beds are county council funded, if you are funding privately this can impact on cost.
When you visit, note how the residents are dressed, have the staff shown attention to detail, are people wearing watches, jewellery, perfumes, scarves etc.
Have a peek at people's fingernails , are they clean and well manicured.
Note if the staff stop and chat to people, do they crouch to speak at the same level to people who are seated.
Is there a choice of meals and snacks available
The CQC (care quality commission) inspect all homes and hospitals and reports are available on their website. They inspect on 5 areas Safe,Caring ,Effective, Responsive, Well Led. The reports will tell you how the home has been judged. Remember this is just a snap shot over a day or two inspection. If a home has ' requires improvement' in one area, read the report, it may just be a piece of paperwork that is out of date or similar (which would not necessarily impact on the care of your loved one). To a family the Caring and Well Led are usually the critical ones, if a home has achieved an outstanding rating in those areas they are well above the national average.
I hope you find the right place which will give you peace of mind.

How lovely that so many people offered help on this sad subject, made us older people feel that perhaps we haven't been forgotten as much as sometimes we feel we have
thank you all.

Greenbanks was a great homely nursing home unfortunately it has recently been sold and not as friendly as it used to be, which is very sad
