FareShare - feeding the homeless
- Alex Cameron (17th Dec 2004 - 14:31:17)

I had the pleasure of visiting the offices of Fareshare recently, who take surplus foods from large supermarket chains etc and redistribute it to those in need, i.e. homeless people, malnourished children etc. That food generally tends to be thrown into the ground otherwise.

Now on its own, landfill isn't the sexiest of topics, but when you put it into context it livens up a bit. Fareshare were funded by the Landfill Tax Credits Scheme, but have now had that funding cut off due to idiot jobsworths in Defra trying to balance the books. What they have is a great idea, a futuristic business model for a 21st century charity, and a lot of heart.

If you have the time, do take a look and see what is happening to them - this type of thing goes unnoticed simply because its not the most interesting of things - that what the evil overlords rely on when killing off the budget for them to run. My own company is going to help them get more effective through using some very advanced technology, and i can't help thinking there's a huge amount of intellectual capital out there at their disposal for helping with things like dealing with the press, organising logistics etc.

Do we have any need for this in East Hants (they run by franchising and building local depot networks)? Freddie might be able to help answer this one - i know we have the harvest thing on Christmas Eve.....
