Carnival Update
- Karen Feeney (7th Sep 2010 - 13:53:02)
Hi Folks,
Carnival takes place on Saturday 30th October. We have decided to save our pennies this year and will not be producing a specific programme, however, we are very grateful to The Herald who have kindly donated money to our fundraising pot this year and will be doing their usual detailed spread on Carnival so you can get all the info you need to plan your afternoon and evening from there.
You can also find lots of info in the latest Community Magazine who kindly gave us several pages to display our map, categories etc. You can of course also refer to the Carnival pages on this website.
I should also let you know that we are not having any fireworks in the Square prior to Carnival this year. This is for both financial and most importantly, health and safety reasons. We are however, lining up some great entertainment in the Square to keep you amused until the procession starts at 7pm.
Bonfire and Fireworks in Radford Park will be happening at usual!!
So put the date in your diary and we look forward to seeing you all very soon.
Kindest regards
Liphook Carnival Committee

Just curious - why has H&S prevented the fireworks display this year, and not previously?
Did something happen last year, or has there been a change in regulations?

No change to regulations but we noticed last year that a number of dead fireworks fell into the crowds and one narrowly missed a pushchair. The fireworks in the Square were originally started by Chris Hampshire and we kind of inherited the tradition, but with constraints on our finances and obviously not wanting to harm anyone, it was decided by the committee, not to take any risks with people's safety.

Hi Karen
Sorry to hear you're not doing the programme anymore, we really enjoyed the write ups and photos. Did you think about producing one but selling it rather than giving it away for free? I have been to a local carnival in devon and they sell programmes for 50p. It raises money for the carnival and advertises local business too, there is always a lucky carnival programme prize to help promote the sale. I think they do well as they always sell out!
Good luck
Katy

Katy,
That sounds an excellent idea,
if its a small programme, somewhere small local companies can attract people to the village, and maybe future Carnival watchers ( able to give monies to the charity)
Local shops, including news agents, bakerys, around the village could sell them, some will be open on the night.
this might make a fair bit for the charity
I would be able to help put info together and im sure others on here would do the same :-)

It would also be a good place for local societies and groups to advertise. I'm sure Bramshott and liphook art and craft society would like to advertise

I expect some people will miss the fireworks - but they terrify my grandchildren, so we shall now be able to come up to the Square to see it start out.
