Freeview tuning
- Freddie Dawkins (8th Dec 2004 - 22:57:44)
All -
A plea for help. I've ditched Sky and bought a Panasonic Freeview box. Almost completed set up and we had a power interruption, which seems to have screwed the whole thing.
Does anyopne know how to start again - or do I need to take the box back to retailer and beg a replacement?
Manufacturers instructions are hopeless!
In hope.

Re: Freeview tuning
- Mike Grimes (9th Dec 2004 - 09:43:21)
Sorry I can't help but I have a different but related problem.
I have a Toshiba television with an integrated digital receiver which was purchased back in the OnDigital days. I would just love to wipe it clean and retune all the channels so that I don't have to skip over all the old (OnDigital) channels that I cannot, now, receive.
I can add new channels fine but the old ones just won't go away. Does anyone know if it can be done and how?
Thanks.

I guess this is my area really, so here goes.
Freddie - which Panasonic model is it? The chances are you may have to go through resetting/reflashing the box with the help of a qualified Panasonic support engineer. Power outages are every engineer's nightmare as only have the settings are there. The best bet is to see if your retailer is sympathetic.
Mike - again, which model is it? Does it have a smartcard? You should have some way to edit the channel listings and/or do a completely automatic re-tune. Every hardware manufacturer does it differently, so there's no standard way.
Try the www.digitalspy.co.uk forums perhaps?

Freeview ! I'm impressed you can get it. I borrowed a set top box to see if I could receive it. No joy. But someone mentioned that my ariel may be pointing the wrong way. Anyone know which way my ariel should be facing (and do I need to get a new ariel if I change direction - because they also said that I might).

Alex,
It's a TOSHIBA 28WT98B - the manual tells youy how to retune it but it does not remove the old channels.
Finchie,
There was an old thread on this at :
http://www.liphook.co.uk/?section=interactive&page=talkback_thread&id=50
and an item by Alex on the left hand panel of this website.
Hannington is the usual transmitter for Liphook (northwest) but some point at Midhurst (Southeast). Because digital signals are currently weak (so as not to interfere with the analogue ones) you may need a high gain wide band aerial.
Mike.

Try the Freview site:
//www.freeview.co.uk/canireceivefreeview/index.html, type your postcode and it tells you. Apparently, in my area I need a "wideband" aerial.

Chris - ignore the Freeview site. The BBC updates it sporadically and the information is only really a guideline. You can receive it in Liphook. Couldn't put it better than Mike did, but i'd strongly advise against repositioning it yourself. Aerial engineers have specialised tools to measure signal strength etc, all of which save a lot of time and hassle.
I did ask at the BBC, Strategy & Technology, Eldon Technology, and at Access Devices (the maker of the Top-Up TV and SetPal STBs. They all said to talk to the manufacturer.
Mike - quite bizarre as almost all EPGs i know of give you an option on the retune for editing/removing listings. Those damned IDTVs are so irritating as they just never seem to be able to work properly or in a standardised fashion. I'll keep asking and see what a few other people i know can come up with.
This site might help:

Freddie:
Yours is almost definitely an resetting issue i'm afraid.

And just to update: we called in James from TV Technics. He lives in the village (01428 724044). Brilliant bloke. Sorted in an hour and all working fine. Thank you, James.

Freddie - Glad to hear that. Can you elaborate on what he did to fix the problem? Was it a resetting issue?

Re: Freeview tuning

Hi, Alex -
I was not around when he called, but as I understand it: my brother-in-law and a.n.other had managed to mix the leads up, after I had got everything connected correctly! So, James reconnected everything, fiddled with his tuning gizmo and the box sprang to life.
Great picture and sound by the way.
Since discovered that the Pioneer box is even better than the Panasonic (though costs aboput £20 more). Apparently the software is more user-friendly and robust and installation is just about the easiest on the market.
Better than paying shedloads of money to Sky for channels I never watch anyway.
