Dog faeces in the Rec.
- Simon Bulmer (10th Apr 2003 - 22:31:21)

As a regular user of this, once beautiful area of Liphook, I am beginning to feel a little dismay at the shear volume of Dog faeces that is left by the irresponsible dog owners of Liphook. Let me make it clear I am not making generalisation here, I admit it is not all dog owns but I feel it is the immoral minority, that is spoiling it for the moral majority. This has to be stopped, it is truly unacceptable.
There is no excuse for this sort of behaviour as there are numerous clearly marked dog bins.

I suggest a dog faeces patrol to combat this increasing trend and to re educate the irresponsible.

What sort of council backing would be available for this sort of scheme, and how would I go about starting such a project.

Simon -
added to my list of issues for the Parish Council, which have been raised by lots of readers here. I own two large dogs and, on the odd occasion I walk them in the Rec, I always carry some plastic food bags and paper, so should they mess, it's cleared up immediately. But there's no need for mess and all dogs can be trained not to go on public grassed areas anyway. Just takes a little time and patience by the owner.

Train you dogs not to go on the grass, that’s the first I have heard, are you sure you are being totally honest here. If this is the case then why are you dogs not trained?

Anyway I to am a dog owner and I also use the Rec. to exercise my dogs. But I am inclined to believe both the right honourable Freddie Dawkins and Simon Bulmer are exaggerating their claims. I use this area of Liphook at least once a day, and I have not noticed the total devastation they talk about. Are there not more pressing matters that need to be addressed by the council?

Andy -

1. I used to live in London in a flat, and kept a small dog (West Highland) - and he went to the office or wherever with me. I trained him to go in the gutter, not on the pavement.

2. Getting bigger dogs - a lurcher and a weimeraner - I needed to train them even more when walking them in Liphook, as our first house here had a tiny garden. I trained them to go in the gutter along Chiltley Way, Midhurst Road etc. It's no big deal - just needs some patience.

3. But accidents happen, that's why I always carry a plastic bag and some tissues in my pocket, if I have them on the lead and anywhere inhabited.

4. Happy to train you to train your dogs.

Andy -

and I should have added that old neighbours of mine, from Midhurst Road, raised this very issue last night at dinner. I had not told them about the discussion here - but they mentioned how bad it was near the Hall and how cubs, brownies, scouts etc come out of the hall and use the green for activities - not very nice for them to step in dog mess - and potentially quite a health hazard.

As a dog owner, I know what it possible.

This council business seems to be all glamorous dinners.
Anyway, I still don’t grant this issue to be of such importance to take up council time, but seeing as you disagree, I would like to know exactly what the you and the councils plans are to combat this epidemic.
And if you are serious about offering me some tips of this manner of dog training, I would be more than happy to take you up on this offer.

Andy -
Glamorous dinners! You are joking. And anyway, this was a private meeting of some old friends and neighbours - nothing to do with the Parish Council.
Yes, I was serious. What dog/s do you have? How well trained are they at the moment - do they walk to heel/know the basic commands etc?
Once I have this info, I can devise a training plan for you, so that you can train your dog/dogs.
Freddie
