Removal of Chesnut Tree - Railway Hotel Liphook
- Alan (15th Jul 2010 - 10:04:35)

Further to the discussions on the Railway Hotel, we should all be aware that they are trying to get permission to remove the large Chestnut Tree in the grounds.

This is the planning request planningdevelopment.easthants.gov.uk/...

The author of the report condemming the tree has not signed it or given his qualifications to issue such a report.

If you fee strongly about the loss of this tree please contact EHDC - the consultantion period ends on the 20th July

As I mentioned in the 'ex Railway Hotel' thread, I hope the Bramshott and Liphook Preservation Society are on to this. The biggest negative in the tree report appears to be that the tree is 'over mature'. Surely an expert arboriculturalist could prune the tree if necessary and preserve this significant feature of the Station Yard. This was deemed the appropriate course of action for the chestnut tree in The Square.

The work being done to the ex-Railway Hotel looks excellent - it would be a pity to spoil this good work by ruining the appearance of the station approach.

I am grateful to Alan for bringing this to our attention. The tree appears healthy with good leaf growth and a good crop of chesnuts. I accept that trees do not live forever, they are planted, grow and at the end of their life or when they become unsafe, they are cut down. Similarly, trees are grown as crops need to be harvested and re-planted. So, I am not approaching this from an emotional point of view.

I have read what I presume to be a professional survey of the tree presumably commissioned by the Developer. I have no way of knowing the status of this report as it does not include the name or professional qualifications of the author. When the address at the top of the report (The Whitelands Project) is Googled all that appears is the web-site designer.

To my mind, this report has been commissioned with one aim in mind, to have the tree removed and increase car parking facilities for a development of flats (does such a development have planning permission). If any tree of that age is looked at faults will be found. The first action should be to consider what can be done to remedy the faults by professional care possibly pruning and attending to the 'slight lean to the S.' mentioned in the report by mechanically supporting the bough. If all this fails then and only then should felling or pollarding be considered. As it happens, the tree appears healthy, it's in leaf and has a good crop of chesnuts appearing.

I intend putting these thoughts to the EHDC and would encourage others who agree to do the same before 20th July. I shall recommend that an independent assessment of the tree is funded by EHDC before any decision is made by a third party such as The Arboricultural Advisory and Information Service (AAIS) which is the advisory service of a registered charity, The Tree Advice Trust. AAIS is a local organisation and I have no connection with it.

I believe Liphook has a tree warden - as a professional surely he could have a look with an independent view?

Although I no longer live in Liphook, having left in 1966, my childhood memories involved both of the chestnut trees in Liphook. The one referred to here is where we used to stand and catch the bus to Mill Chase School. The tree in the Square is where I used to stand every morning to catch the bus to Headley Mill, where I worked. Wonderful memories of my life in Liphook - please leave the trees alone.

Sadly it seems that car parking or building extension is more important. Consent has been given for the tree to be cut down. It makes a mockery of tree preservation orders. I wonder how old the tree is (was)?

As I can remember these lovely trees leave them alone surely they look nicer than cars in a parking, these are not so important as the countryside. There are enough places to park in Liphook are the people too lazy to walk.

Maybe if I could get hold of the timber I could turn something from the tree as a permanent reminder of it ?

or several if enough timber , some could be auctioned off fr the carnival funds ???

Suzane

Too late for the tree I'm afraid. I expect the space is needed for parking as I believe the developers plan to turn The Railway Hotel into flats.

How about a statue of St Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. If you present it to Bramshott and Liphook Preservation Society, I will make a donation to Carnival funds!

Further possible source of 'lost cause' timber.....

The planners in their infinite wisdom have also given permission for a mature oak tree on the Bohunt Estate to be felled. This is near the Bohunt entrance and next to the B2070 (old A3), as far as I can see from the plan. This tree was also the subject of a Tree Preservation Order.

very upsetting to hear the tree has been cut, after so many years

I had a major winge about this as you can see, but it seems the tree was genuinely badly diseased and in danger of falling so there was no choice. It does look very bleak in the station yard now - the Railway Hotel particularly, -despite the excellent restoration work, although some small tree planting is planned. Not sure the same can be said about the oak tree I mentioned in a previous post though. However I can only hope EHDC have been as diligent with this as they apparently were with the chestnut tree........
