How do I stop the windows scam people ringing?
- Miranda (27th Jun 2016 17:06:38)
Hi all
Anyone know how to stop the people ringing claiming to be from Microsoft saying I have a problem with my computer?
We've tried everything... saying we don't have a computer, saying they've been reported... saying that our phone is now patched through to the police who are investigating... hanging up on them... and still they're ringing every single day sometimes more than once... we're now getting calls from someone saying they're from some company who can stop these pestering calls...
I've asked them several times to take us off their list, but they keep on ringing...
Would love to know how to stop them!!!
Thank you.

Change your number to a premium rate number.

Get your number on the telephone preference service (google it), it takes a while to activate, but if they call after activation calmly ask for their name, company and telephone number... this way you can report them. Also keep a log of when they call, time etc.
You can pay BT around £5 to block specific numbers.
Also ask for a hard delete of your number from their database.

I had constant calls from these people at my old property. Once they know someone lives there, they don't stop.
Because the calls originated from abroad, I was told by the TPS that they could not do anything.
I had to change my number in the end

Sarah is right. The telephone preference service is great. I'm used it for my parents who kept getting the calls and it has worked well.
Best advice until they stop is not to engage in the call. Just say Jo thank you and put the phone down. Even if they keep talking. Good luck.

I had one of those at the end of last week and I regret to say that the caller caught me at a bad time and, uncharacteristically, I let him have it, at full volume, such a stream of spleen and invective liberally laced with profanities before slamming the phone down.
I don't know what he thought of it but I have to say I felt much better for it and my day improved noticeably from then on.

I have these new phones that screen all these calls. I have not had one since I got them. Someone recommended them on Liphook Talkback. You can screen every call that comes to you. I would highly recommend them too.
Only trouble is I do miss the occasional scream of abuse down the phone to release the angst, like Paul Robinson

I have call preference registration but still receive the calls, mainly from outside of the UK. The caller preference thing only works for the UK I think and I am getting calls mainly from India and Pakistan and the Philippines.
I also keep getting a machine-voice call purportedly from Lloyds bank fraud team asking me to input details using the phone pad!
I have now taken to switching teh answering machine on, and only picking up with a friends or relations starts talking. My kids now start their calls by speaking in the receiver..."Mum it's me, pick up!"

Thanks everyone for your replies... really helpful.
We are on telephone preference service, but doesn't seem to help... if we ask them their name etc they just hang up.... likewise if we get cross they hang up...
Telephone that screens calls sounds really good... will look into that.
Thanks again

Remember that just because the phone rings doesn't mean that you have to answer it!
I recommend you get caller ID, so you can see if it's someone you know calling. If it isn't a familiar number or you're not expecting a call, just don't answer it. Any genuine caller will leave a message, so you won't miss anything important.
