Nineteen Eighty Four
- Eneida Nelson (17th Nov 2004 - 09:21:05)

Anybody out there familiar with George Orwell's novel 'Nineteen Eighty Four'??

If not, I suggest you read it straight away, for he was obviously, only 20 years out.

Almost everything is now in place and I'm sure, from some of the stuff we're getting on the media, they're working on Newspeak right now!

BE AFRAID - VERY AFRAID !!

Also read Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (not the rip-off by Michael Moore). It's only a matter of time before you're not allowed to read 1984.

Rob.

Hi, Eneida -

As a former journalist and sometime spin doctor for the European Commission, I have to agree. The journalists today are, generally, frightened of their own shadows (and lazy) and reproduce Press Releases rather than actually seek out the truth.

I despair of the BBC News. Radio is still, generally, good. The Today programme is a real treasure. TV News is often so sycophantic it makes me want to throw something at the screen. There aren't many Jeremy Paxmans, Kirsty Wares and Jeremy Vines around - we should do everything we can to nuture them.

As someone who's lived and worked for years in many European countries, I am appalled at what I see happening to our societies. Belgium used to be a really liberal society (after the terrible language riots of the 60's) - now it's almost as polarised as the UK. France is magnifique for standing up for itself and protecting its traditions. Germany has lost its way in many areas. The Nordic region is struggling in economic terms but still looks after the individual (though at a price).

Anyway, I'm going to live in Spain for at least 40% of the year and enjoy the sunshine and personal freedom still afforded the Southern Mediterranean citizen!

best regards

Freddie

Fantastic book, and definitely recommended reading. I could certain yadder on for hours about this type of thing - id cards, CCTV, detention without trial, government euphemisms...

Interesting fact that i never knew though - the book was written about the British government of the day in 1948, not a future scenario.

Anything in particular that inspired the post Mrs Nelson?

So Freddie you're going to join the ex-pats in Spain!

Well you won't have any problems with your tomatoes out there and be able to grow all sorts of exotic stuff outdoors.

A lot of my family have lived there for over 30 years and they love it. Too hot for me though - I prefer Portugal.

If they bring the national identity database in, i'm certainly going to join you. Is there a spare room? Either that or i'll stay at Eneida's place.
