Tomatos
- Mrs Nelson (11th Nov 2004 - 14:27:04)
To get back to normality on this web-site... Is there a tomato expert out there??
In the spring I planted some tomatos in my greenhouse and inspite of lots of TLC nothing much happened. Now, just when I want to clear the greenhouse they're romping away flowering and fruitting like there's no tomorrow. I've never planted them before so where did I go wrong??

Funny things tomatos, relient on good soil, correct temperature, soothing music and to be well fed.
I planted six tins years ago, never saw them again!

I don't know who you are (although you remind me of someone) but if you can't say something sensible about tomatos kindly leave my thread!!

Hi, Eneida -
Sorry to have been so quiet of late. Not been in Liphook much. Tomatoes were a wash-out this year for everyone I know who planted outdoors. Put it down to incredibly dry May - yes, remember those 30 days without rain. Then soaking June, then weird dry/wet July/August.
I lost just about every tomato plant - I had more than 50 in this year, from plums and cherries to beef tomatoes and seed from all over the world. Just a few from the first flowering and then rotten. Everyone else I know had the same experience. Only people who got a decent crop were greenhouse growers.
But some good news: I decided to try growing celeriac this year for the very first time. From seed, in the loft, and then transferred to the greenhouse and finally into the gaps left by early potatoes, I now have almost 100 celeriacs thriving. Lifted one two weeks ago and it's the size of a large fist and tasted fantastic. They are very hardy and slow-growing so I should have some good-sized ones for Christmas lunch.
If you've never tried celeriac - happy to drop a couple by your front door next time I go past. The leafs are excellent for salad. Flavour of leaf is more subtle than celery stalks. Celeriac itself is one of my favourite veggies, just never realised how easy it is to growe and a great second planter after something like potatoes have been lifted.
rgds to all here

Hi Freddie,
Lovely to hear from you again - you're always so sensible!
I love celeriac, my mother used to braise it in butter, quite delicious, but I suppose there's a Government ban on that sort of thing now.

Hi, Eneida -
Actually celeriacs are a bit small. But they grow on through the winter, so I'll let you have some more in the New Year. Everything here is completely organic - including the original seed. Hope you like the taste - j'adore!
best regards

So its "Mrs Nelson" then eh? Sounds more headmistress-like if you ask me.
Ralph - you sound a little conspiratorial there. Is that a vendetta brewing, or something with a perfectly innocent explanation?

OK - I hold up my hand, Mrs. Nelson was a slight disguise....but at least it is my name MR IRELAND!!

And although my birth name was Ireland, i can assure you Mrs Nelson (and all my adoring fans waiting in line either to sue me, run me over or throw missiles through my windows) that my legal surname is Cameron. So unfortunately no further controversy is waiting there, nor fraud. Liphook just doesn't get that exciting...;)

You're sounding a bit peevish Alex! I'm sure nobody is lining up to do all those nasty things to you - certainly not me.
Anyway 'Cameron' is a much better name for politics - it has that Scottish ring to it which is so fashionable nowadays.

Peevish? Eneida you are the standard-bearer on this forum, and i'll give you a hug when i pop into the book club next month. Your tenner's in the post in the meantime though!
Will a scotsman ever rule England? Certainly not Charles Kennedy by the looks of things, but then the electorate chooses what is familiar to them - a jewish romanian immigrant might be endearing with his so-called 'British dream' but the other guy from the home counties seems a lot more on the level.

Wow Alex!! I'm not used to such flattery from you - it must mean you've forgiven me for calling you Mr. Ireland.
Hugging AND kissing are traditional ways of greeting in many parts of the world, so quite OK. In fact, I think there should be a lot more of it in this country! You could try hugging Paul as well.... perhaps not.
Listen you're wrong about the Scots not ruling England -have you forgotten James 1 and all the rest of the Stuarts? In fact, Prince William will become (as William V) the first monarch to have any English blood (through Princess Diana) since Queen Anne. All the rest are a mixture of German, Danish and Scottish. (are you still awake?)
As for politics isn't the government stuffed full of Scots ? Brown, Blair, Cook etc.
I'm a bit puzzled by your last paragraph. I recognize the Jewish/Romanian as Howard (although I think he sees himself as Welsh) but who is this fellow from the Home Counties who you think is on the level?? I just can't recall anybody who fits that description - I really can't!! :-r
